I will simply give my interpretation of the lyrics and say nothing more. This is going to take me awhile to type out, as I'm fairly tired, but I will share my interpretation nonetheless. First of all, Maynard is extremely intelligent. His word choices, although at a glance nothing too impressive, in reality are extremely well-chosen. I would love to spend a day with him to hear his opinions and views on life. I know the pieces fit 'cause I watched them fall away --- Biblically, the earth was of "of one language, and one speech." This makes sense when you take into consideration that only Noah and his family survived the flood. The families of the sons of Noah traveled east to the plains of Shinar and decided to build a tower to reach to heaven, and make a name so as to prevent them from being scattered across the face of the Earth. This is creepy if you pay any mind to "conspiracy theories" involving the Illuminanti and a New World Order. Man has been wanting to play god since the beginning of time. It's also worth noting the Bible says they used slime as mortar to hold the bricks (pieces) together. Slime isn't going to hold bricks together. Slime is thin, slippery mud. Half-water. I know quite a bit about masonry. While you do add plenty of water to mortar mix, it hardens. Slime doesn't. Anything that is half liquid isn't going to hold anything together. "And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech." Now everyone's communication is fucked up. Language was scrambled. This effectively crippled any hope of completing the tower (most likely meant to represent becoming God), considering without being able to communicate measurements, design, and such, there is no way in hell you are going to be able to coordinate construction of anything, including masonry. Maynard is obviously an intelligent guy. The "pieces" that fell away refer to both communication and the bricks that crumbled in attempting to build the tower without any communication betwen the laborers. Mildewed and smoldering, fundamental differing --- Used this this context, mildewed is a synonym for diseased. A less well-known definition of diseased is unsound or disordered. Disorder is exactly what happened as a result of loss of communication. Smoldering means burning with little smoke and no flame. It also means to exist in a repressed state. Imagine all of a sudden being unable to communicate with your brothers. All language scrambled. This line means that an essential part of communication between individuals was removed. Pure intention juxtaposed will set two lovers' souls in motion --- This line is somewhat cryptic. I get the feeling that it means Without any sense or experience, save wanting to find the end, people reproduced subconciously in order for their descendants to exist, continuing their existence. Disintegrating as it goes, testing our communication -- Unity and cohesion is lost, as the original intentions become reduced to fragments. The light that fueled our fire then has burned a hole between us so -- God was the light that "fueled the fire." Fairly self-explanatory. We cannot see to reach an end, crippling our communication -- From soul to soul, we never can see when the end will be. 200 years ago, people were most likely talking of how Christ would soon return (like today) and living accordingly. People are confused. People don't know how they got here or how it will end. I know the pieces fit 'cause I watched them tumble down -- The use of the word tumble rather than fall away isn't a coincidence. In the first line of the song, fall away refers to what was supposed to be drifting away from its established course. No fault, none to blame, it doesn't mean I don't desire -- There is no individual to blame for the loss of communication and why we're here. To point the finger, blame the other, watch the temple topple over -- He desires to blame this mess on someone else and watch religon crumble. To bring the pieces back together, rediscover communication The poetry that comes from the squarin' off between And the circling is worth it, finding beauty in the dissonance -- Even with the lack of harmony, and seemingly pointless existence, there is still beauty, truth, art, and originality to be found within and from it all. Between supposed brothers Between supposed lovers --- There's no real evidence to support a common ancestry, character, or purpose between other humans. But allegedly there is. If you'd like to know how I came about to know this song and Tool in general, I had written some lyrics that were ridicuolusly similar to these. I showed them to my friend, and he pointed me to this song. Maynard appears to have a fucked up, beautiful, soul. He's a tortured genius. I was raised with Christian dogma being pounded into me nonstop. At 18 now, I still haven't shook it off completely. That's why I was writing a similar song to this. I really would like to have a conversation with this guy, because I feel it would honestly benefit me. |

| In the bible, the final plague God involved "The Destroyer," the Angel of Death who swept across Egypt on the passover, killing the firstborn of every family. Those who slaughtered a lamb and marked their door with the blood of it were passed by. It's a hardcore fucking story. The song is implementing his hatred for a girl with this biblical story. 99% of you stupid fucks have no idea what you're even talking about. It's a pity you can't appreciate the simple meaning behind this excellent song when you take into consideration you have no idea what the lyrics are even talking about. Stupid fucks. BMTH kicks ass. About 100% of their fans, on the other hand, are retarded, uncultured faggots. In fact, I've never even heard another person accurately say what these lyrics even really mean. Which pretty much says there's a shitload of fake pricks claiming they're such hardcore fans, while in reality they're just in it for the image because they want to fit into something. Pussys. And congratulations to Luxani for actually giving a fairly accurate interpretation. It's basically just a badass sounding song about a whore who is having biblical plagues prayed on her.
