Opeth – Coil Lyrics 16 years ago
I tend to think the first three lines are kind of one sentence or possibly 2, no? They're certainly not all individual sentences. It's something like this:

"She told me why. She told me lies always take care of this."

As in, she told him lies can cover for something, some problem. Especially since it's the same in the second verse:

"I told her how I've always stayed. Always waiting, for nothing."

So, she's trying to cover up something in their relationship with lies. Maybe she's saying, if they both ignore some problem it will just go away or stop being, i.e. be taken "care" of.

His argument though is that he's always been there, "always stayed", "waiting" for things to get better, but nothing has changed.

The rest of the lyrics then seem to confirm that there is no hope for the relationship. The "here" being the relationship. Once the guy, who is obviously the one being held in the relationship by the woman, finally decides to break free, he'll be able to see clearly and realise how long he has been in an, ultimately, fruitless relationship. However the "chorus", if it can be called that...

"And I can, see you
Riding through the fields of sorrow
Yes I can, see you
Riding through the fields of sorrow "

This seems to suggest, since both singers sing it as themselves looking at the other person, that both will see the other as suffering from having left the relationship. Of cours emaybe they both just see what they want to see and can't admit for themselves that they're not happy out of the relationship, so they shift the focus to the other person's perceived misery. It's hard to say. :]

A Perfect Circle – Judith Lyrics 16 years ago
Everyone who believes that Maynard felt that God let this happen to his mother and is angry at his mother for still having so much faith is wrong in the fact that Maynard doesn't blame God...he doesn't believe in God and is annoyed with his mother that she would believe in something that would let her paralysis happen. She didn't "drive the hateful spear into his side". Why would it happen if God actually existed? It wouldn't...because it has nothing to do with God, because he doesn't exist!

Maynard is anything but a devout Christian. The fact is he's undermining his mother's faith.

It's "your lord", "your god". Not his.

Basically he's asking "How can you believe in something that would allow this to happen?".

"It's not like you killed someone
It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side
Praise the one who left you broken down and paralyzed
He did it all for you"

Jesus died for our sins, for what? So that people still die, sin and suffer. Why do those that had nothing to do with Jesus' death still suffer? What did he do for us, if it wasn't to rid the world of suffering? The fact is, as Maynard states, there are "oh so many ways for me to show you" the problems with faith, religion, etc.

Although this is a really old post, I'm just reading it now...so I'll answer your implied question. Like many others who criticise Christianity in their music, Keenan was born into a Christian household. This means Christianity automatically becomes the focal point of his dislike of religion.

I'll ask you something I find amusing and disturbing at the same time...why are babies, with no knowledge of anything in the world whatsoever, automatically forced into a religion of which they know nothing about? It's not very "moral", is it?

Metallica – The Day That Never Comes Lyrics 17 years ago
I tend to lean towards the abusive relationship meaning from the lyrics...

I think benighted was spot on for the most part however I interpret the chorus differently:

waiting for the one
the day that never comes
when you stand up and feel the warmth
but the sunshine never comes, no
no, the sunshine never comes

I think it could be meant in the way that people in abusive relationships usually don't leave them because they are in love with the other person. To stand up and feel the warmth I believe is "feeling the warmth" of the abuser. As in, one day they will change, but alas that's "The Day That Never Comes"

God I'll make them pay
take it back one day
I'll end this day
I'll splatter color on this gray

This is strange though in that the song changes from 3rd to 1st person...but it could just be Hetfield showing how the abused person changes their opinion of their abuser...perhaps the moment when 'enough is enough'.

Hence the moment when the song goes heavy and "I suffer this no longer, etc..." is sung.

Anyways that's pretty much what I got from it...take what you want from it.

Slipknot – Snuff Lyrics 17 years ago
DreamersDisease and kacperator you've both got it between you imo...

Basically he said "leave because I'll only drag you with me", but when she did he was basically thinking "What the fuck?! You don't love mean enough to fight through this." And that's what has hurt him.

"You couldn't hate enough to love. Is that supposed to be enough?"

This is one of my favourite lines but I'm conflicted as to what it could mean exactly...

I agree with what someone said about hate/love being the same thing...in a way. Although I would say they are opposites and "indifference" is in the middle. However the idea I think was right...I think to feel the sort of hate Taylor is singing about it's coming from FEELING so strongly about someone. When you hate something somebody does (drinking, smoking, taking drugs) SO much it is usually because you love them as much or more and simply want what you believe is best for them. So when she couldn't hate his problems enough to try and fight them with him, Taylor saw it as indifference, and therefore she also didn't love him enough. They go hand in hand as it were. You can't have one and not the other.

Not sure if I've explained that quite as well as I hoped but anyway.

I do also like DreamersDisease's explanation of the line though...so I'm just not entirely sure.

Amazing song though...no doubt about that!
