Tegan and Sara – The Con Lyrics 17 years ago
Here's my complicated take on this:
Tegan overhears her partner saying something negative about her, assumes the worst, and acts on it, writing a letter to her partner defending herself, and also talks to friends and the like about her suspicions. Her partner gets mad at Tegan for eavesdropping and taking things out of context, and Tegan realizes that she was being stupid. But everyone she talks to jumps down her throat all over again, even though she's no longer assuming the worst (I could be wrong, I don't have the liner notes on me, but I thought it was "Erring on the edge of safe") And in the second verse she's waiting for things to calm down and talk to her partner and in the meantime not catastrophize, but she knows she's really angry at her, and she starts imagining that her partner will break up with her, and so dreads talking to her ("Faint of heart, don't call me back). She has too much time to hang around and imagine the worst situations, so she can't get it out of her head, even though jumping to conclusions is what her partner is mad at her for. She wants to talk to someone about it, basically have someone tell her to stop being so anxious and reassure her that everything is okay (Encircle me I need to be taken down), but everyone is just mad at her and is freaking out at her (Calm down, I'm calling you to say...) So she makes herself out to be a victim so her friends and her partner won't be as angry with her.

A little literal and very based on the lyrics, but I really didn't get the impression of cheating in this song.

IAMX – I-Polaroids Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this is about being depressed, and as a result his girlfriend is getting more and more frustrated with his lethargy. And she shows him himself, how bad it is, how unlike his old self he really is, like she's showing him a photo she just took, and what he sees there kills him, makes him more depressed.

The Indelicates – New Art for the People Lyrics 17 years ago
This song makes me cry. It's so gorgeous.

I think the first two verses are describing this abusive relationship between two people, and then in the third verse they're being abused by fame, the media etc. They draw parallels like how she says that she's terrified when he shouts but then loves him more, that's like a tradeoff she makes, and then they later say how hiding out under the covers is a worthy tradeoff for their 'freedom' and celebrity. I also think that they see all the shit they have to go through as a price for being able to make the "new art for the people"

They also play around with this theme of undying loyalty, and they act like swearing to be loyal to one another is this amazing wonderful thing, but in the third verse the undying loyalty is the trap that forces them to put up with all the unwanted attention and whatnot. Loyalty isn't a virtue if it's just tethering yourself to something bad for you.

Gorgeous gorgeous song. She's in this relationship that is so unhealthy, and she knows that it's unhealthy, but she's more than willing to stay with it. She's resigned herself to this being the best relationship she could have. I think she's also trying to feel as if she's more in control than she actually is by saying that this boy is an actor who is playing his role exactly as she wants him to, and that she is using him, when in reality she is of course the victim.
