anyone listen to munly & the lee lewis harlots? this reminds me of them, in that it feels like a southern gothic tale, the dark side of americana, blah blah blah i get this picture of a pretty girl in a ragged dress, an ill-kept back garden in the sun, the boy who comes to save her from the brawling, dirty family life. they have this pagan romance thing going on, with nature, and the snake( bible, satan-like) slithering around. they run wild, have sex in the woods and set fire to her home and family. she regrets and revels in it simultaneously. but that's just me. |

there is something bitter and relentless to this song. all the weighty syllogisms piling up on top of each other until the character is flat on his/her back in bed with a learned historical figure sitting on him, making unreasonable demands. maybe, it's about frustration, stress, a kind of defiant outburst at life, fate, etc and i think ezra pound, specifically, is there because of the whole play on words with pound of flesh. could've been anyone.her word play is amazing. |
