breaking up and finding someone new. i believe he's primarily suggesting falling for someone while you're with or just getting over someone. the first chorus talks about hard times and struggles in a relationship. when the writer talks about the "car crash" not meaning "we're gonna have to stay" he implies that getting through hard times together doesn't necessarily mean you're meant to be. it's about not being completely given to one another. he doesn't want a love that exists simply because he's used to his partner (finishing each other's thoughts) nor outside appearance and show (everyone else...) at the point where lost and found comes out, it really makes a beautiful analogy. like a train station - constant exchange of people from one place to another. the last few lines of the song are my favorite. "the iridescent light of folly's lure" is referring to the lure of something new, something different, something like a new love affair. it's my favorite ola podrida song i think... |

ha. in almost every song, sufjan talks about his past, his feelings about his own actions and the actions of those he's known... and his standpoint in view of God. he's very spiritual, and it surfaces in nearly every title... when he says "you came to take us, to recreate us" he's talking about Christ. he's got pain and mixed feelings. needed to run away for i while. i feel him! |

This is indeed a super catchy song. The delivery of the lyrics are what make this song extra good. Camera Obscura has a way of portraying complex situations in a purely objective way that shows the emotions without ever being cheesy. Magnificent. The meaning behind this song is obviously about a girls confused feelings for a teacher. Though I feel like there's more than one relationship. It sounds to me, like she's got a friend in class who likes her. She is addressing him when she says "I'll be a friend to you" and "its not love". She's talking to a boy she's with. "I'm not interesed in breaking your heart. I'll leave that to lookers like him" is referring to the teacher. It's an interesting reference - she feels the teacher is breaking her heart, she leaves that to lookers like him because it has been left to him. she doesn't want to get involved with anyone when she knows of the feelings because it would carry through to whomever she was with. He's in the back of her mind while they spend time together. when they dance and she says "in truth it is the last thing i have in my mind." she asks if she's way out of line and says "i won't need telling twice" because she knows she is, yet she is confused about how to deal with it. "He wants to kiss" refers to this boy and she's going to have to keep her "feelings inside" - feelings for the teacher. Its sort of a very watered down double life. |

He's singing about taking care of his love. Not defending her like a tiger or preventing the bad things from happening, but being there for comfort and companionship. The "yr" is an old term (much older than the 80's) ha. often used in the old southern gospel songs. to me it's always been a more personal, nicknamish way of saying "your". |
