I would agree with what people have said about a portion of this song eluding to a story about Conor Oberst. Especially with the line "I watched him pen a 'Perfect Sonnet'" It doesn't get much clearer than that. Moving on the song seems to be telling a friend (possibly Oberst) to let a woman go because she is causing some sort of emotional pain. Again the song switches topic into speaking about a beautiful woman who sees herself as much too ordinary, but satisfied. This woman gives birth to a child and it's a humbling and very real experience. She's just a mother, a maid, a normal person. Again the lyrics urge the idea that if someone or something is causing pain or unhappiness, you should leave it behind you. And possibly this advice he all he "could afford". |

Obviously this is a song about a quick and ill-fated relationship. The guy realizes that he cares more for this girl than she does him and is truly sad about that. There is another obstacle involving distance, a separation of whatever form. Eventually the whole situation comes to a head when he says "take it or leave it", and she leaves. He is ultimately regretful but understands that fate decided what happened and it can't be undone. It's a depressing song but also extremely beautiful. "But we can't unfate this, So can we unbelieve that fate moves the pieces?" I absolutely adore that line |

Like others have said this is a song about love in it's purest form but it's also accompanied by the fear of actually telling a loved one. The second verse really changes the tone of the song when the writer makes a sudden realization that he/she is in fact tired of chasing someone who is clearly unavailable either literally, emotionally, or physically. The end is a little harder to interpret. But I think it's really a reflection of acceptance and realizing that this situation will pass. "to seem like a wall it is, a little bit, the better to see you with " The tone of the song changes again to a wishing and remembering state. That she'll likely not see him or ever have the close relationship that's desired but maybe it's better that way because one's imagination is often better than the real thing. |

I'd probably agree with fruitonpie and say that this song definitely has a reference to Conor Oberst but I wouldn't agree it's entirely about him. This is a beautiful song, and as sad as some of the words are it sounds extremely hopeful. I can't stop listening to it. |

I feel like this song kind of hits you in a way you might not expect at first until you really give it a good listen. I agree with jrlaffrey that this song is most likely about a relationship that's ended but reason is probably death. Either way it's a beautiful song. Fitzsimmons is an amazing writer. |
