This song to me is about grace and blame. The beggar (Christ) is the hero, but the fact that he is overlooked by the soft-handed boys shows that they are ignoring him to their fast-paced life around them. The man who wasn't sleeping over his decision of finding a man to blame is Pontius Pilate, who ends up having to chose to kill Christ (the hero) because the soft-handed boys were determined to see him killed and blamed forced him into the decision. Although he wasn't convinced, he needed Christ to fall to please the masses and clear his own conscience. Then again we see the imagery of the "soft-handed boys" still in their fast paced lives, giving to a poor holy mother who is left with nothing, feeling better about themselves (although they were the ones overlooked the dead man who is on her lap while he was alive and a beggar, and were the ones who ended up killing him). She is looking for someone to blame as well, and just as this is happening, those boys who should be to blame are looking up in repentance to Christ. This just shows so much about grace and human nature, and also about how blame can be such a dangerous thing that should be really looked at before acting upon. It demonstrates the dangerous cycle that is blame, and how we really have to look past ourselves and our busy little lives to really see the big picture and all the consequences for our actions towards people. |
