| The Avett Brothers – I Would Be Sad Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I know this is a love song and, in a way, all love songs are very similar but it's refreshing to hear one of a different sort. This is the only song I've come across that describes exactly what happened in a chapter of my life and exactly how I felt about it all so perfectly. When I first listened to it I was talking to a friend while it was playing and when I heard the line "And I know we are young but we won't always be so marry me", I turned it up and started it over. I was just baffled to hear how perfectly it applied. Anyways, that's why I appreciate this song a lot. | |

| I actually never realized this was a cover. Who orginially wrote this song? | |

Not that it's incorrect to find literal meaning in the line "a sun came" but it just occured to me that he could be meaning a son came. The rest of the song points to Jesus Christ, the son of God, coming. you could even add an extra word in the last three lines: There is still a Lord but I never felt so lonely UNTIL a sun (son) came. |

This song's meaning has always kind of baffled me. At first listen (and actually all the way up to reading the other comments just now) I've always thought that it was simply about the feeling of regret and sorrow when you neglect your friends. I didn't even think about the romance aspect except for the kissing through the night part. Oh I dont know what I'm talking about. The great thing is I dont have to! I love this song! It's melancholy but at the same time it has a strong feeling of joy, especially as the song develops. From the beginning to the chorus to the ending, its all written and preformed so beautifully! |

I know this will be thrown way at the end and it seems strange to quote a comment made three years ago but I'm responding to jady's comment below: " Sufjan may well be a Christian but this is not christian music, which has at its core the desire to praise God; just music about how he feels... in other words, "music". " I think the line between 'christian music' and 'christians making music' is small but should be nonexistant. I mean would we call David's Psalms 'christian music'? because those were often grievances towards God too. if they were all praise all the time they would seem like blind praise. Its the revelation, joy, and gratefulness at the end of grievance towards God and his character that is praise. So I would say a song like this, even though it is not a joyful, triumphant song of the saved thanking God for his mercy and love, it is still glorifying him. Its a true human emotion that even we, as christians, have towards our heavenly Father. questioning Him is acceptable and encouraged, I would go as far to say. Because in God's will, it always ends with an "OH... now I get it. God IS good." |
