this is a guy letting a girl know that just because he may have kind of backed off showing her that he likes her, he still has plans to take their relationship further. he knows that he has plenty of time and doesn't need to rush things. He doesn't want her to give up hope that they'll get together and move on. It's summer and he wants to have fun, but in the end, he's "saving the best lines" for her. "let's get together and we'll build a city, and if you're willing i'll be coming back ready. put up and if you miss me, spin me, sing me". he wants her to know that if she holds on to what they've had so far, it's ok for her to say how she feels and that when he "comes back" they'll be together. it's almost like a test to see if the feelings were strong enough to keep going even if nothing happens immediately. |

i first heard this song at a time when it instantly made sense to me and explained to me what i was going through when i couldn't figure it out for myself. "if this is test i'm losing my shit... ...if this is a test i'm wasting my breath" if this isn't the end of the relationship, but just a really low point, there is no reason to freak out and lose hope, but you never really know if that's the case or not until it's over. "you're a stranger i know well, and not at all." you realize you're having all of these complicated feelings for someone that in reality, you don't know very well at all, but feel as if you do because of all that you feel for them. |

the line that sticks out to me in this song is "these are the trials of our youth"- learning to love, let go, move on, take chances. these are the things that are part of being young that make you who you are for the rest of your life. "but this charade is never going to last, so pick the poison and pour yourself a glass"- we all have to grow up. no matter how much you resist, you're goign to have to grow up in some way, so you might as well make some decisions. |
