I heard much of this differently. there is definitely a lot of baseball imagery in the lyrics -- someone who knows baseball would do a better job than me! i'm probably missing some easy references. here is my stab at it: On the Rio, Rode the sparrow, Drank the marrow, Spade the clerics I spent all day Saturday toasted, Roasting in your room Fall fight, Skin tight, Unhinged and sizzling. Call back, To the almanac Tall branches and missions. Slow, lofty rise up. Slow down baby it'll come, Goin' for a homerun. Slow, lofty rise up. Slow down baby you'll come in. You're goin' for a homerun. You can't live with it. Where you wreck it and run. Do what you can (?) All night, It's on right, So fresh that it sizzles. Ball cap, Almanac, So dim it's a riddle. Small light, Some wax (?) Ball's cracked as it wasn't enough. Slow lofty rise up Slow down baby it will come. Goin' for the homerun. Slow lofty rise up, Well now sooner baby you will come in. Soarin' for a soft glove. Shed skin, for kin. I'll be alive when all this is over. When all of us are sober. Shed skin, with kin. I could lead you over, I'll see you in the clover darling. I'll be dancin' on your footsteps, Out here on the beach house (?), out here on the cold outfield. Shed skin, like a master. Comin' faster, it's comin down.(?) |

one small correction: towards the end, it's "choosing something false". i think this song is about loss of trust in others, in the world, in oneself... |

| i thought it was, "I'm gonna get fired for this" instead of "I'm gonna get five for this." | |

a couple little correction ideas: "for several years of notebook lines must have slipped..." "and here i found the confidence and gall..." |

guys... i think you're overthinking this finger line ;) it is 'your trigger finger's cocked.' as in 'you have a gun pointed at me,' in a metaphorical sense. as in 'you have all the power, and i'll do whatever you say.' to me, it's a song about relationship politics. he's in a confusing relationship and they are never on the same page, but she's the one with the power because 'he's on the rebound.' he feels powerless to her even though he doesn't know where she stands: her 'trigger finger's cocked,' he's 'feeling weak'... i <3 beulah |

| i'm pretty sure the 'snot' caked into his pants is not referring to nasal excretion. he is watching a stripper...a very good stripper. i think this song is about being hopelessly obsessed with a stripper he can never have. | |

to bugoff and tonyk: thank you for your British insights... as an American, i would never have made those references, and they really give more depth to the song's meaning. i've always considered it a cautionary tale, but now i get the point a bit more. |
