I like in the video when he mouths "Badlands" and does the fist thing. Yay Bruce!

Is it just me, or is "the target of this hand" a masturbation reference? (See also "Cold Girl Fever")

The National – Gospel Lyrics 17 years ago
Ok, this might be really far out there, but just bear with me for a second:

This song continues a storyline that began in apartment story, it is the story of a zombie outbreak.

In Apartment Story, the song goes, "We'll stay inside 'til somebody finds us, We'll do whatever the TV tells us." I feel like this is the story of people holing up in their apartment, waiting for the news of what to do as zombies take over the world outside their besieged apartment.

Here is another story of survivors, waiting out the zombie epidemic or war, very well possibly in suburbia. The "Holiday Rainbow Lights" are a signal to whoever might be out there, like search and rescue teams, that they're alive, a signal, you know. Again, there is the television reporting news of the outbreak or whatever, and I guess the main character (the speaker, in this case) is "wasting time" because he needs resources or shelter and has nothing to offer the home with the rainbow lights, or something like that.

I dunno. Maybe I've just seen too many movies in my time, or I'm reading too deep into it. I more than likely am :-p

But what can I say, The National are amazing. That Pitchfork review is totally true, you get out everything that you put in, and more. With every listen, I always hear something new, something that I haven't noticed before. I love The National, and I can't wait to see them live . . . eventually.
