What a powerful, deep, symbolic song. I can honestly say The Classic Crime's new album is absolutely flawless. God and Drugs is about how people try to substitute their addictions for the need of God ("look elsewhere"). These false gods aren't necessarily drugs (a metaphor the title suggests) but can include money and material possessions that people idolize and crave instead of God. And they get the same comfort and relation with their addictions than they did through God, which eventually leaves them in a rut. But come to the realization that God is the ONLY thing that will truly always be there and never go away. Sure, the Classic Crime do not label themselves Christian Band because of their problems with the CCM industry. But they surely do deal with God and Christian themes in their music through some of their songs, as well as keep it general enough so that anyone, even people outside the Christian faith, can relate to their songs and messages. What an amazing band. |

In an interview with The Classic Crime's frontman/vocalist Matt MacDonald, he was asked the story behind the song "Medisin" Matt: "There's a couple songs that are about addiction or about using a substance to escape, which could be really anything, but this specifically talks about drinking and as an escape from truly living, because truly living to your full capacity is kind of terrifying because of the sacrifices you need to make. It's kind of about that, it's kind of about a longing for something more in just day to day life and the ups and downs and a longing, I think, is in everybody's heart, as humans for a higher power or some sort of sense of what's going on because nobody really knows. That's what that song's about." |

Everyone is right to some extent, but the first verse was inspired by and is about the Bodies Exhibit. The touring exhibit that displays actual, perfectly preserved, human bodies inside and out. It really is a life changing experience and the first verse makes complete sense if you've ever been to it. One of my favorite quotes ever is "There's more glory to be seen, and savored through suffering, than ever was through self serving escape" Vocalist Matt MacDonald explains this line in a recent interview, a must read: "That's something I wrote down in my journal years ago. It's like something I came to realize. But the Bodies Exhibit got me thinking of how we spend so much time on ourselves as people, trying to look good to everybody else. When it comes down to the core, you know, we're all mortals, we're all human, we all look like this on the inside. We all have these organs, we all function the same, so instead of trying to put yourself ahead of the pack in the way that you look or the way that you act, instead of being selfish - be selfless. And that's a line that I can draw from, that I've written down, that I can put into the song because it made so much sense. You know, that there's more glory in suffering or, not self-suffering in self-pity or wallowing, but sacrificing for somebody else, than there is to self-serving escape- which really that's what it is, an escape. You know, you see different people in walks of life escaping, so to speak. And it really comes down to selfishness and that was one of the things that inspired me about the Bodies Exhibit is that, it's like "Wow that's me, on the inside" and here's a guy and he's dead and so your mortality is...you're kind of hit with it. You're like, "that's going to be me. I'm going to die." You know, that's real. And so what am I doing everyday to make sure that, because obviously I'm taking care of myself but, am I making an impact on anybody else? Because life is fleeting." Hope that clears up this amazing song's powerful message and makes people further appreciate the deep thought process behind songs like Abracadavers. To anyone who listens to this music, I salute you. Bands like The Classic Crime produce well thought out meaningful lyrics that apply to anyone at all stages of life with rich symbolic themes. Unlike most mainstream garbage with paperthin lyrics about 'love' and drugs turning people into mindless followers. I prefer music with meaning. Believe me, The Classic Crime will become one of the best bands of our time. Whether the mainstream public decides to accept them or not. |
