i would say that this is definitely about nostalgia. wanting to be with someone you used to be with. it's been a while, but you're still waiting to get over them. at this point you've realized you won't get over them, but you'll never be with them again. it's too hard to get through to this person. you don't feel like you're enough of a priority to them. it's SO sad. i just want to give this person a big fucking hug. |

i think this is one of the most fruitful song lyric discussions i've ever read. personally, i agree with both thenewspirit's ideas as well as everyone who think it's about living in american culture. i think it's about both, the relationship being on a smaller scale and america being on a broader scale. it's an incredible song, and i think there is an undeniable parallel between those two ideas. here's a new thought: what do you think about the whole "shiny city" and "diamond slippers" thing? it reminds me of the wizard of oz. the "empire" of oz was built on this wizard who turned out to be a "fake." with that in mind, does anyone have anything to add? |
