metallica obviously own this song. quite like the sonata arctica version, mostly because i prefer his voice. but this one is strangely good as well. i have all three in my playlist of epic songs. apop are probably one of my favourite bands.

How did you know i was a wierdo? :S

its just the way i read the song. whenever something is written, drawn, said, sung, organised it can be interpreted in any number of ways, infinite ways really. i had no idea about batman references, i just listened to the words and got a lack of openness within a relationship.

Nine Inch Nails – Right Where It Belongs Lyrics 16 years ago
seems to be about questioning reality and whether all you see is all that is there. kinda sums up the concept of solipsism. fits in well with the storylines of vanilla sky as well as has been previously said, the island. the security and routine of daily life seems to be the most convenient/safe path to continue with. but by settling into a comfortable life and ignoring your dreams this person may have driven themself into a kind of coma. the animal in the cage represents the truth about life and society which they have kept separate from their own little bubble of a life. and because theyre in this secure bubble they have become afraid to look outside of it in case they see the gritty truth.

alternatively, it could be describing solipsism on a more philosophical level. the chaotic world in our dreams is far more challenging and daunting than our 'real' life. its possible that fear of this real and chaotic life has forced the character to create within his dreams a stable life in a stable world, all within his head. being so much more secure here, he retreats here increasingly more often, eventually believing it to be the real world. its a thought i used to have quite a lot until i decided i probably couldnt change it anyway.

another factor is the fact that trent wrote the album during/shortly after rehab from drug and alcohol addiction. he could be describing himself hiding from the world within a drunken state, fearing the responsibility you have being sober. hiding from the world in this way can make you feel more secure, alcohol can be a companion, but after a while it makes you hollow. a routine of waking up and drinking all day is sure to leave someone feeling empty after a short while. but having to sober up will destroy all the security you felt you had and that can be daunting.

just my interpretations, most likely wrong. either way its a fantastic song and i love the four bars increasing in pitch in the background, kinda fits with the whole routine thing.

Tilly and the Wall – Coughing Colors Lyrics 16 years ago
epic song. seems to be about someone who sums up tragedy. she's free and she is in control of her life. she seems to be free from the norms of society and acts beyond the restrictions imposed. "she was the sky, beyond the steeple and the choir". i knew someone just like this. she was a stoner, backstabber and ultimately a bitch but during the short time you knew her, you felt as free as she did. tragedy is generally about good people with issues or in poor situations. she is happy and free with the ability to make friends fast due to her attitude but this means she drifts through life and friendships with little aim, moving on to more useful people. the narrator to my mind knew her briefly and is describing her as something very transient. she bursts into your life, open and flawed (i'll help you shovel out my shallow hole shows her acceptance of problems and highlights her openness) and eventually she drifts back out of your life into the wider world to repeat this pattern. Like i said, i knew this girl, god knows where she is now, most likely somewhere lying on a heroin stained mattress or partying with turkish royals.

The Crimea – Lottery Winners On Acid Lyrics 16 years ago
sounds more like "id she gets arrestive, i want arrested to me" to me.

tis about a guy who idolises a girl but is innocent in a fairly crucial way. "when she goes trippin, i go fallin over is a prime example. her meaning is euphemism, his is literal. he loves her and her lifestyle but doenst know what it means.

would checkered wallabies refer to burberry hoodies by any chance? makes sense to me.

Hot Chip – Ready for the Floor Lyrics 16 years ago
sounds to me like a reference to closet homosexuality. coming out and all that, rather than anonymously carving up walls. however the sexuality thing is only because its a guy singing about guys. could generally be about bringing relationships into a public realm rather than within half-arsed graffiti. however, the nick grimshaw explanation does also make sense. whichever way, its an epic song.

completely only just noticed this but its the same riff as bad religion - shattered faith. no idea which came first but either the line in this song is a reference to them or the title of bad religion song is a reference to this.
