although words are the apparent choice for expressing meaning, this band has managed to give so much meaning by using so little. it still astounds me how just listening to this song and others by them can procure so many images, thoughts, and emotions. truely amazing band :] |

| Silversun Pickups – Booksmart Devil Lyrics | 17 years ago |

i think the key verse to this song is the third one. a land-locked lover can be defined as someone who is very introverted about their environment; they aren't very knowledgeable or aware of what is going on in the world around them and/or they have their own beliefs and explanations that they stand by- true or not- about the world (referring to anchored armor). so its saying to disreguard biased people's claims, or at least that what they say isn't always true. the first two verses are saying to believe in streetwise angels (someone who is smart in the ways of the world, someone who has good common sense) and book smart devils (people who accel scholastically, who are academically inclined, etc.) also take note of the use of the words angel and devil; devils are creatures that are "not to be trusted, they cause chaos and destruction" and when paired with book smart, i think it can be implied that they are referring to politicians, corrupted leaders, teachers, etc. so i think its saying that even though they're devils we're forced to believe in them because they have so much influence and impact on out lives, as do the streetwise angels (friends, family, "everyday people"). i think the term angel is applied to streetwise because usually common sense and knowing the ways of the world are used more than book smarts, and are also your saving grace. the order in which the verses are sung can also be taken into account. in general people believe the streetwise angles more than they do the book smart devils, because the "angels" have more of a personal influence on our lives. the third verse follows it up as a warning that streetwise angels and book smart devils can very well fall into the land-locked lovers category. the repition of the word sobering sums it all up; the fact that we can't always trust and believe in those who we would like to (or even have to) is a very sobering fact indeed. |

| Silversun Pickups – Dream at Tempo 119 Lyrics | 17 years ago |

The opening of this song sort of parallels this Shakespearean quote "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players; they have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages." This seems to be his final exit. He's not dead yet (while the lights stayed on) but he is about to die. (the familiar buzz was now long gone, i just waited there) He's waiting to die & prepares himself by taking a seat i front of the cardboard screen & his life is played before his eyes. In a world full of so many people entering & exiting the stage, no one cares that the curtains are about to be drawn on him. His soul is leaving his body "as the music soared into the air, as the lights went down" & then he sees her, the "angel from his nightmare" so to speak. His death is a nightmare where " they took to the crowd and aimed towards me. as the circle closed I held onto the one with splintered clothes." It seems as if there are unwelcome or evil beings after him & in the midst of it all he spots a familiar presence who appears to be reaching out to him & trying to help him despite the damage done in their past. "I couldn't end it there" suggests that he is still clinging to life &/or the threads that tie the two together, but she is crumbling & breaking away from him just as she did 20 years previously. The advice "don't open your eyes and you can swim" is the same as she gave him long ago: you'll be okay if you can block out the world, your problems, your fears. You can stay afloat by not being blindsided, so close your eyes, tune it all out. Now she is meaning it to block out the who or whatever is coming after him& to let her go, & then & only then he can pass on into the afterlife & be at peace. |

| Wolfsheim – It's Hurting For The First Time Lyrics | 17 years ago |

for some reason the relationship ended. he tries to forget about it and puts up a front that everything is okay, but she's still there in the back of his mind and after so long he starts to realize not only that he's hurting, but that he wants her back and isn't going to stop trying until he does. simple yet sadly sweet. |
