| Shelby Starner – You Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I'm surprised there aren't more comments on this song! As for the meaning...this is my interpretation. "After hours of deep thoughts..." - The narrator has given a lot of thought to the situation, and realized that it isn't "meant to be" with the guy she loves. Every time something wrong happens, the guy leaves. She smiles at the world, but inside she's "suffering." She says she's better off by herself while she cries. "Cuz I don't belong here..." - The two of them are opposites. She wants to be with him, but he's making it difficult. She doesn't want to rely on the guy's false promises or attempts to comfort her; she wants to rely on herself to get through this situation. She's heard the guy's attempts to comfort her dozens of times and she doesn't believe him anymore. "You say you love me..." - The guy gets her hopes up by telling her "I love you." But the narrator sees how he treats another girl, how he kisses the other girl and makes her feel wanted and needed and loved, and knows the guy loves them both. He can't seem to choose. She's tired of this, and he probably is too ("I don't want this any more than you do"). She doesn't want him to say "it's all going to be OK" because it won't be. The situation won't change, and she'll still be hurt. "Cuz I, I don't belong here...Don't tell your lies/We've been over this/A hundred times..." - Again, the narrator knows she's better off out of this situation. It's not doing her any good to stay in it. She and the guy have gone through this multiple times, but nothing ever changes. She doesn't want the guy to feed her any more lies, and she's tired of getting hurt. Amazing song, both in terms of words and the way Shelby sings it. Rest in peace, Shelby! |

| Missy Higgins – The Special Two Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
The narrator made a big mistake (it could be infidelity, which is what other posters have suggested) and wishes for things to be okay between her and the other person again. She wants to be part of "the special two" just like it was before she made that big mistake. This is the first song of Missy's I listened to, and it's a great one! So heartfelt. |

| Missy Higgins – Where I Stood Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
"I don't know what I've done/Or if I like what I've begun/But something told me to run/And honey, you know me/It's all, or none/There were sounds in my head/A little voice is whispering/That I should go, and this should end/But then I found myself listening" - The girl has made a move to end the relationship. It's an absolute; either she stays or she goes. She listens to what her mind tells her, which is to leave. "Cuz I don't know, who I am, who I am without you/All I know is that I should" - She's lost her identity. She needs to find herself instead of getting lost in the relationship. "And I don't know if I could stand, another hand upon you/All I know is that I should" - She isn't sure if she can handle the other person being with someone else, but she knows it's the right thing to do. Chorus: "Cuz she will love you more than I could/She who dares to stand where I stood" - Another girl will come along who will love this person more, and take the narrator's place. "See I thought love was black and white/if it was wrong, or it was right" - Again, absolutes. Opposites. No shade of grey. "But you ain't leaving without a fight and I think I am just as torn inside" - The other person isn't going to let the relationship end without saying or doing anything. The narrator feels uncertain. *Chorus* "And I won't be far from where you are if ever you should call/You meant more to me than anyone I ever loved at all" - The narrator says she loves this person and he/she is still important to her. "But you taught me how to trust myself/And so I say to you.../This is what I have to do" - The narrator has confidence, thanks to the other person's influence, and knows she's doing the right thing. Painful, but right. The last few lines reiterate that the other person will find someone else, someone better. Wonderful song. |

| Backstreet Boys – I'll Never Break Your Heart Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| The guy has feelings for a certain girl, but she's not willing to give him a chance because she's been hurt by a past boyfriend. The guy (the narrator) is trying to persuade her to give him a chance, because he isn't like the ex and he'd treat her much better. I loved this song when it came out. | |
| Backstreet Boys – Crawling Back To You Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| The guy didn't realize how good he had it until he lost the girl, so now he wants her back ("crawling back to you"). | |
| Backstreet Boys – Something That I Already Know Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Two people are in a relationship that has to end. They've tried to make it work multiple times, but they keep fighting and they're "to the point of no return." So the best thing is to say good-bye and go their separate ways. | |
| Coldplay – The Scientist Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
This song seems to be about losing someone you love, whether it's through death or a breakup of some sort. It's beautiful, both in terms of lyrics and the sound. I'm listening to the song right now, in fact. :) |

| Vanessa Carlton – Rinse Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Oops, I meant "she must rinse *this* all away" in my previous post. Thought I'd correct that... It's a great song. |
|
| Evanescence – Anywhere Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Beautiful lyrics and sound. Definitely my favorite song by Evanescence. The narrator wants to run away with the one he/she loves so they can be happy together. | |
| Natalie Imbruglia – Everything Goes Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| A friend recommended this song to me, saying it reminded her of my situation with a friend of hers. I had strong feelings for this guy and while he liked me romantically for for some time, this ended somewhere along the way. I agree with AlaileScribe, but I can also see TheChumpster's view on "insecurity." | |
| Vienna Teng – Blue Caravan Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
A friend said this song reminded her of me after I parted ways with my muse, a man I loved but needed to get over because he didn't love me back. I think the narrator's "true love" could be someone she made up entirely ("he was a beautiful fiction"), or it could be that he was in her life for a time, but left because of things not working out ("my true love is a man that I haven't seen in years"). When she says "the highway is my great wall" it represents the obstacle between her and her muse/the man she lost. |

| Kelly Clarkson – Addicted Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I've been down the road the song describes... hanging on to someone/something you shouldn't. The lyrics sum up "addiction" so well - how you *think* you can handle whatever you're addicted to, so you keep going back, even though the relationship or thing is unhealthy for you. | |
| Vanessa Carlton – Rinse Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
This song is about a girl who's desperate for love. She clings to someone because she doesn't love herself enough. She has to learn that "the heart of a woman will never be found in the arms of a man." She has to let go of the relationship ("she must rinse him all away") and learn to love herself. This song reminds me of myself not too long ago... |
|
| Michelle Branch – Goodbye to You Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This song reminds me of a guy friend I was in love with, but could never have because he just didn't feel the same. We had to go our separate ways because my feelings for him were too strong, and I needed emotional space to heal. The lines "And when the stars fall/I will lie awake/You're my shooting star" seems to mean (to me) that he's someone she'll never forget. | |
| Vienna Teng – Unwritten Letter #1 Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| A bittersweet song about love unreturned. | |
| Blue October – Calling You Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| A great song about two people in a romantic relationship, just enjoying what they have together even though they're (temporarily) apart. | |
| Dave Matthews Band – Say Goodbye (Album version) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This song describes 'friends with benefits' very well. Dave does a great job singing about the temptation and the "what if" / "it's done" factor in many friendships. | |
| The Fray – All At Once Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I think this song is about a guy who has a best girl friend that he can't forget ("There are certain people/You just keep coming back to/She is right in front of you"). He and the girl are great friends and he could develop a romance with her, but he's not sure ("You begin to wonder/Could you find a better one/Compared to her now/She's in question"). "And all at once the crowd begins to sing/Sometimes the hardest thing and/The right thing are the same" - People around him tell him to go for it and ask her out. But then he starts comparing her to other girls (his ideal, or girls he's been with in the past, or girls he's met) and he can't commit. The best girl friend has likes him romantically, "but she won't keep on waiting for/You without a doubt/Much longer for you to sort it out." Then he realizes that maybe he does want to commit, that "perfection will not come." She isn't perfect, but she's a great match for him. "And all at once the crowd begins to sing/Sometimes/We'd never know what's wrong without the pain/Sometimes the hardest thing and /The right thing are the same." I think the "pain" stems from the confusion that comes from deciding who to be with and his treatment of his best girl friend in the process. Again, a commitment with her is the best thing to do if he would just go for it. The final stanza states that if he waits too long, he'll be too late ("Maybe you had her/maybe you lost her to another/To another"). |

| Hem – The Part Where You Let Go Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I know this song is from a commercial, but I never saw it... A former friend introduced me to this song, so it reminds me of him. I think the song means that even though you "let go," you'll always have someone that's 'there for you." It's a beautiful song. | |
| Plain White T's – Shine Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I discovered the lyrics here several years ago, but I didn't get to listen to the song itself until a few days ago. This song is about someone who is trying to help someone else get through depressiion and/or a drinking problem. The friend points out that life still needs to be lived, and that believing in oneself and turning away from alcohol are paramount. The friend also sees "a bright light shining inside you/it shines out through your eyes" and suggests, "Don't be throw it away/don't be afraid/don't hide/let it shine." But it is up to the other person to change his life, and the friend warns that if those changes aren't made, the depressed alcoholic will continue to "run away." | |
| Backstreet Boys – I Still Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| It's about longing for someone who isn't there anymore. The feelings are still there ("I still need you/I still care about you"; "I still feel you/Like I'm right beside you") but the other person doesn't keep in touch with him/her ("but still no word from you") because there's nothing left to say ("though everything's been said and done"). | |
| VNV Nation – Beloved Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I interpreted this as a love song, one between "soul mates," the first time I heard it. It's both haunting and beautiful. | |
| Better Than Ezra – Breathless Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
This is one of my favorite songs. :) The person in the song is telling someone else that he/she will always be there for him/her. It can be taken in a romantic or platonic context, but I lean slightly towards the romantic side. It's a beautiful song, and well worth listening to. |

| Cowboy Mouth – Jenny Says Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Snowdog2112Rob, you make total sense. :) This was the first Cowboy Mouth song a former friend introduced me to, and I loved it. I was hooked from the start. The song seems to be about letting go of your fears - even for a little while - and enjoying life. |

| Edwin McCain – I'll Be Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This song grew on me. I didn't like it at first, only because it was played constantly on the radio. Now it's both special and bittersweet to me. It reminds me of a friend I had and subsequently lost. Not only is "I'll Be" his favorite song, but I'll always think of him when the line "I'll be love suicide" comes up. | |
