I mostly agree with everyone else, Except I think this song is about a guy who falls in love with a girl, who has a lot of problems and trust issues, and has been hurt a lot from the past. "She's a pretty girl She's always falling down I think I just fell in love with her But she will never remember, remember" Meaning she's so hurt from all the guy in her past, she doesn't notice the narrirator, who loves her, and she is too blind from all the hurt and jaded-ness and self pity that she doesn't even notice how much he loves and cares about her. "As if theres something familiar about me The past is only the future with the lights on" This probably means the girl is crying because she might love him too? Or knows she could possible get there? But she is scared to death that she will get hurt just like in the past by this guy, so she is crying her eyes out because she wants him, cares, loves him, but is just reminded too much of how much it could potentially hurt if things go bad with him, just like every other guy. Then the narrirator tells her "the past is only the future with the lights on" (which is so poetic and true) to say to her that the past is the past, and you couldn't control it, but you have learned from it and light has been shed from all of that and you're only stronger from it. He wants her to move to the future, even though it unpredictable, you should just live because it's kind of all you have. |

This song is definitely about two loves, first loves, I think. About love that is innocent and pure, clean and beautiful, without all the messiness of certain mature "adults things" that are in relationships when they get older. Then the couple possible gets married, and it's been a while. "Since you asked me to be Your cat, your dog, your owl, or bumblebee" Cat, dog, owl, bumble bee, kind of like to hubby? "You'll walk up to me and erase my memory Can't wait to feel brand new I cant wait to meet you again, friend" Meaning that every time they walk up to him, he falls in love again, forgets all he was thinking of, and sees her the same way he did when they were first in love. "I think I must have known you in another life I think our rocking chairs used to rock together All night" Him saying that they are true lovers, meant to be. I think that you have your soul mate, and if you don't find them in your first life, you're bound to meet in the next, and this line kind of is like that. How They probably found each other in a past life and managed to find each other again, because they're meant to be. "Tiny ships in bottles, they won't sail too far" like what setsunamudou732 said, They won't sail too far away from eachother, because they're meant to be, it's their destiny, and they cannot escape that. |
