i just love this song! seems like every song entitled "sweet(est) thing" i adore...or at least the 2 others i know by chaka khan and lauryn hill :o)
anyway, i don't understand all of the "beautiful song, but sad that she treats him like shit" comments. to me it's apparent in the lyrics that the love and pain shared is two-way, that there is give and take between them. the woman (Ali) in the song definitely has her faults ("throws me like a rubber ball", "made me crawl" etc.), but he seems to be contributing to the storminess of the relationship as well and he acknowledges as much ("baby's got blue skies up ahead but in this i'm a rain cloud" "you can sew it up but you still see the tear" = he has pained her in the past). and keep in mind the song is from his perspective; despite what they BOTH do to EACH other in their relationship, there is nothing like the love they have together :o) |

i would never have realized this if i hadn't been listening to erykah badu's "mama's gun" and outkast's "aquemini" at the same time for a whole a week, but dre's line about "the gypsy" hitting him to "some life game" is about erykah badu. she answers back and affirms her identity as the gypsy in her song "...& On". i was like "oh shit!" when i made the connection. i knew that they had been together and had a child, but it was still kind of cool to see them referencing each other :o) |

p.s. also i'm sure he may have been feeling like this (i.e. sense of dillusionment from fame) for awhile, and perhaps that experience with my friend was the trigger to write about these overall sentiments in a song. |

i know the person who inspired the song; my friend went to one of his concerts and got to hang with him backstage after it was over. they started to make out, etc. and he (Duncan) kind of got pissed that she didn't want to 'go further'. but she laughed and gave him the ultimate reality check: "hate to steal your thunder but you ain't nothing special. you're no more celestial than anyone else" (that is what she said to him and i can kind of see that b/c she has a habit of using words like "celestial" in unusual ways in normal speech). the rest of the song he built around that fleeting experience. so yes, the song is about him and based on this flash of realization. |
