Voxtrot – Dirty Version Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is about Jack Kerouac and the other Beat Writer's insatiating desire for (the American) wildnerness and its promise of freedom.

"and I bet he had a habit
of pulling down the wall
and I bet he made a fine job
of bending all the rules" - are probably references to Neal Cassady's erratic behavior

"east to west in this place" - reference to Kerouac's journeys across America

"I remember we were reckless
Half asleep across the floor
I was young and we got restless
Oh pretty girls make graves" - reference to "The Dharma Bums" -Kerouac retells of spending every weekend drinking and partying in Ferlinghetti's log cabin outside of San Francisco with Gary Snyder. "Pretty Girls Make Graves," is directly quoted from the book.

"Lisa wants a revolution
I can see you've had your fill
yours is just a dirty version
I'm gonna walk away" - Commenting that Kerouac's and Neal's revolution may have been irresponsible and selfish. It was "counterculture" but socially unproductive.

"Can't you see that your big promise
Fell apart in '73
Give yourself to something honest
what makes a man today" - 1973 was the big oil crisis when the OPEC nations proclaimed an oil embargo on the States. This is metaphorical for the imprisonment of the car, that it is no longer free to run and roam. "Give yourself to something honest" follows and adds on to "yours is just a dirty version(revolution)" The ends of Kerouac's books are filled with a strong sense of abandon. At the end of the drunken road, there is nothing left. It ends. Perhaps these wild journeys are irresponsible. Maybe freedom is not the wilderness, but the acceptance of one's obligations.

Los Campesinos! – We Are All Accelerated Readers Lyrics 17 years ago
I'd be the one that dies (no one dies)
Well then what's the point?

You should have built have a statue, and so I did of you
And you were ungrateful, and slightly offended at the dimensions of it
You said you looked less like the Venus de Milo, and more like your mother in a straightjacket

-i might be overanalyzing it but:

the first two lines i have up are probably existential references
then the bottom is romanticizing a woman whom in turn did not like it ("You said you looked less like the Venus de Milo, and more like your mother in a straightjacket") the woman takes offense because it is romanticized in the opposite fashion. mother in a straightjacket=the modern corporate slave

Beirut – La Llorona Lyrics 17 years ago
Ever away from seeing more than life
The morning lies miles away from the night
No man ever could steal her heart
But With bright gold coins I’ll take my shot

And all it takes to fall
If you don’t walk, might as well crawl

All it takes to fall
What a quiet world after all
Of the things that you guessed will come
What a moment it was after all

Little Joy – Don't Watch Me Dancing Lyrics 17 years ago
Margarita has a strange appeal
sways between suthers on a broke heel
Of course her desires they always misunderstood
She rather been scarred than be scarred with love

In conversation she often contend
Costumes builds customs that have all dead-ends
She found her courage in a change of scene
This sunday social would be short its queen
All her best years spent distracted
By these tired re-enacments
With the right stuff
she would try her chances
Somewhere else

There he is a step outside her view
Presiding the words he hope she might pursue
Night upon night of faithful lie shore*
He only convinces legs across the floor

Please don't watch me dancing
oh no don't watch me dancing

Something changes when she glances
I'll have to teach you what romance is
With the right stuff
they tried their chances
Somewhere else

Please don't watch me dancing
don't watch me dancing
Please don't watch me dancing
don't watch me dancing
...

Voxtrot – The Start of Something Lyrics 17 years ago
this song has the most poetic verses

"If I die clutching your photograph don't call me boring it's just cause I like you"
"Come by and see me, I'm a love-letter away"
"I watched every inch of film flash across your roman features"
"Poetry is not a luxury, it's how I break this home" -his words aren't for the pleasure of talking but his way of convincing her to leave her oldman
"Inside your room you said:
"You never really live until your back's against the wall,"
Oh, did you really mean it?" -hinting at cheating on her oldman but never breaking up (a game)
"Oh, tell me your thoughts
Tell me your thoughts on liberty
See there's a place where I sink to sleeping
She said:
"Oh, my vote is as red as my blood,"
Will you join me for another round?
I haven't had the chance to speak yet" -the girl is a marxist; in WHISKEY ramesh also mentions the SSP(swedish socialist party) some hint at his political agenda.

Matt & Kim – Silver Tiles Lyrics 17 years ago
yeah i see what you mean. I think after everything, you'll always be judged subordinately. never making it to the top in the eyes of the beholder. its like getting jobs, life, and shit, you'll never prevail because of the b you got when you were 17.

Bon Iver – RE: Stacks Lyrics 17 years ago
I believe Vernon uses a poker as a metaphor for life.
The "stacks" is a reference to building up burdens and responsibilities for life and how it is against society and poker to unstack or lose your chips.
Hence the the unstacking of your load.
The crow dangling the keys references a quick tease to finding your self and the meaning behind your life.
The replacing of the "sun"(suns usually references an idol/god) means he needs to find a new philosophy in life.

the ending lines basically sums it up

Architecture in Helsinki – Souvenirs Lyrics 17 years ago
(With an envelope we’ll enter buildings we
might touch.)
refers to love letters/ phone calls/ some type of initiation into a relationship. buildings we might touch means to develop a meaningful relationship/love

(I’ve got souvenirs but yesterday can’t
mean too much)
they broke up leaving her with memories but no future

(have we missed an opportunity.)
pretty straight forward

(Whispers
Chinese leaves a message, leaves a metaphor. For what
once was gold and once was rich and now is poor. )
what was once something amazing is no longer anything possibly friendship

Have
we missed an opportunity?
