I first thought this song was about incest and loss of innocence, since I always heard: "Slept in the dust with his daughter, her eyes red with the slaughter of innocence." I assumed a father had slept his own daughter which had cause her too lose her innocence, and her lover's struggle to cope with this being the "I will pray for her..." part. And the repetition of the "the evil that men do live on and on, " emphasizing the fact that the father's evil lives on in the now troubled life of the daughter he raped.... After reading deathway's explanation and listening to the opening verse closer I think I was really far off, but thought it was an interesting explanation to share. I can't wait to just listen to the whole album with a new concept in mind! |

To me the narrator of the song, is currently in a relationship with somebody that they are unsatisfied with. They spend most of their time daydreaming about another person. They want to show the other person the situation they are in. "I want to be your eyes and show you me." and I think they are asking the other person to burn the broken bed. Maybe it's an ex-lover that left them and they can't except their new relationship, but that's just how I see it. Or It could just be the the person the narrator is in a relationship with hasn't physically gone anywhere, but mentally has. There is a lot of images that imply day dreaming, a kind of mental absence from the relationship. I do like ModestMoby's take on it though. ^^ All interpretations aside I think the line "I wanna be your eyes and show you me." is one of the most beautiful lines ever written, the was Sam sings it really expresses the human need for understanding. |
