Yeah, I think this is about casual sex, like solomi says, and I think the geographical bits are about how when you have one night stands and stuff for some people the other person's just a conquest, nothing more. And when he says fingerprints in the second verse, not fingertips, that's also somehow less personal, more, well, clinical. As for the bare ankles bit and the ending, 'bare ankles used to mean adventure' = the flirting, thrill of the chase type bit when you are excited about a real relationship, which is lost in a fling, so 'with you they still do' = they don't have this bond of caring for each other. Love this song. |

| I would say this has two meanings. Firstly, and clearly, it is a tribute to death and quite likely someone they knew who died, as most people have said. I would also say that as the song talks about the song that was played at this funeral, and as it questions what song we will play at our funerals, it is questioning what our legacy. I think the line, "I hope we don't hear Marley's chains that we forged in life" refers to the fact that each chain Marley wore was for some bad deed he did in life, that is, that he hopes we will not be remembered by our bad deeds but by our good, in this song signified by the music: his grandfather/grandmother is remembered by the song through their radio; the friend is remembered The reference between these lines about the chains in the hospital wards, along with the first and second lines of the second verse, suggests that as we die - and as we live, I guess - all we think of ourselves is our mistakes, our "chains". | |

To me, this song is sort of championing individual thought and ideas as opposed to acceptance of what society/ the government tells you to think. I guess that works more for the first half of the song than the second. Completely unrelatedly, I misheard the line "Are you hopeful or just gullible?" as "Are your hopeful lodgers gonna burn?" which makes a lot less sense. =D |

| Hmm..well, this is probably just because I've been reading Catcher in the Rye over and over again for my English GCSE, but... to me this is about some kind of mental breakdown, maybe for romantic reasons, maybe political, maybe something else. I mean, he's hating himself in the first verse, being very paranoid in the second, questioning himself in the third, then the chorus and third verse sound very out-of-controllish, the bit about resisting for people you've never met sounds like Holden Caulfield trying to be an individual but not being able to cope in society any more. And the rest of song is a load of desperation and isolation and basically... yeah. That's probably not right, but oh well. | |

I see this as about a guy who maybe is going out with a girl and is very mixed up about her so doesn't want to open up about stuff to her. Or, if you want something generalised, I'd guess it's kind of saying you can love someone without telling them everything...? Not sure. |
