| I hope it's about pulling over and using a $2 magazine to get off. That would be rad. | |
| Steely Dan – Rikki Don't Lose That Number Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| hm...I always liked to think of this as a song about a woman leaving porn or prostitution, but the gay theme seems a lot more convincing. "you tell yourself you're not my kind" - that's HUGE. "driving on slow hand road" - sure sounds like furtive reststopping to me. | |

What? Dude, it's gotta be about Jesus. 1st verse, God seems to be addressing Jesus - Old Testament ManGod destroying tribes, sending plagues, and all that sees Jesus going in with his touchy-feely charity, equality, and forgiveness, and seems to be 1) mocking Jesus for having those qualities 2) reminding him that he will be a bit of a weirdo and that it's his mission to be that way 3) wanting Jesus to transcend/redefine masculine/feminine by making positive, stereotypically female qualities available for humans of any gender and/or 4) rethinking his decision to send himself/his son (I always hated that about the trinity) roam earth as a male. Also seems possible that a random human is questioning Jesus, or again, God's decision to send peaceful salvation in the form of a man. Supporting lyrics: "equal any man" - Jesus was supposed to be God-as-human -> equal "didn't you feel surprised to find the cap just didn't fit?" "the world expects a man to buckle down and shovel shit" - physical tasks requiring brute strength, not deep thought or empathy "what'll you do for loving" - don't worry about the shit shoveling, dude - what kinds of stereotypically feminine goodies are you going to bring to humanity? Verse two is a little more ambiguous - is God, Jesus, or a third party talking? You could really alter the meaning of the song, say, singing verse 2 as a call and response duet depending on how you break up the lines. Aw, maybe not too much. "What'll you think of heaven if it's back from where you came?" Someone is addressing Jesus. Or God, since he had to "come" from heaven. Anyway, who comes from heaven? God. Jesus. Angels. Grandma. Patriarchy v feminists? Eh...not the first thing that comes to mind. "tried to be a teacher" - you tried, or i tried? hm... "will you lead us all the same?" - someone is asking Jesus, the "equal people preacher," about whether he'll really blur all the color/sex/gender lines...or is Jesus asking this of God? anyway, just my two cents. |
