i agree, fucking brilliance.
this guy was left. someone snuck out on him before dawn. he's finished, it isn't a nice ending to what they had, so the song CAN'T have a nice ending, or the lyrics and music would be contradictory. |

this is fact not fiction for the first time in years simply means that he is finally being honest about the relationship. he never before had been completely true in what he said or said everything he felt, and now he is putting himself out there, to be easily let down, by being painfully honest, and part of the fact is knowing that it no longer matters and he missed out on his chance.
i'm sorry if someone already said that, but i couldn't get through ALL the ideas. kudos if you did. |

i really understand where everyone else is coming from. and you all are obviously well educated on death cab. but i personally thought it was about someone that ben was trying to connect to someone who had become distant after something happened at bixby canyon bridge, something really traumatic. he knew nothing about what happened there and was trying to figure out what changed the person so deeply, but the person was already dead inside, and couldn't help him. i also thought it was a person (love interest?) that had radically changed his life, awoken him, so he wasn't asleep like everyone else. and after they returned from the bixby canyon bridge, dead inside, he could no longer stay awake, and wanted to bring that person back, and was looking how to do so by visiting the bridge himself. |
