Someone on page 1 eluded to the song being about a girl that left Ben in Seattle to go to Washington DC... That would make A LOT of sense... Just as "ASHeatherton" said, the area code for N.Virginia (DC Metro) is 703, which would explain why he mentions it (as a number or time) in the song... It would also explain songs such as "District Sleeps Alone Tonight"... And for me, speaks inline to "Army Corps of Architects" which I always thought described DC as well as a couple other of his songs. |

Deliberate nailed the metaphor about the city but I think there is a key typo in the lyrics above... It should be "Leaving the central STATES FOR shallow ground"... And that the urn represents more directly the end/death of the relationship. I believe one lover is leaving to pursue her dreams of fame and fortune (Shallow Ground) after years of a seemingly stagnant relationship - which she believes is for the better (Half-Full) while the other, our speaker, is left broken-hearted and helpless to conced the fact his lover is leaving. |

I think its about someone talking to themselves, considering dumping his significant other. Weighing the Pros/Cons... "Restless Eyes close, maybe it'll go away" meaning hes trying hard not to notice other women, "You won't be the first..." trying to convince himself it's ok, "Thrilled you fell apart, instead of them" relieved that he's not the one getting dumped, "It's definite time to destroy this place" he's deciding to go through with it, "Follow what you feel, you alone decide what's real" trying desperately to justify his feelings.
