Peace Street? If we're talking about Atlanta I think it's a crib on "Peachtree."

Morcheeba – Riverbed Feat. Thomas Dybdahl Lyrics 16 years ago
I associate this song with a time in my life when, after I had been working so hard and really struggling in life, things finally cleared up. To me it's about arriving at the place that you wanted to get and slowing down, not having to struggle anymore. Even though the lyrics are addressed to another person, I think of it as being addressed to oneself. When I've gotten to a stopping point, I feel like I'm getting to know myself again, like I can spend time with myself.

I love the line "The past has gone, the pace is slow, infinite." When life stops being divided into deadlines, there's a feeling of time stretching out and being infinite.

By the way, I thought the last line in the first stanza was "Of ecology and philosophy, I'm HOPIN'," rather than "and I'm OPEN."

I love this song. I see it as being about escaping from the cruelties of your life and going somewhere kinder.

Paul Simon – Crazy Love, Vol. II Lyrics 16 years ago
I really identify with this song!

I think it's probably related to PS going through a divorce. The protagonist is at a point in a break-up where he just wants things to be over with and to be out of the relationship. He and his wife are saying petty insults to each other ("She says the joke is on me/I say the joke is on her") and he's numb and just wants to get things over:
Well, I have no opinion about that
And I have no opinion about me

Even though the protagonist isn't a young, good-looking person anymore (he's "fat" now), the divorce will take up time (this will eat up a year of my life), and people will gossip about him ("All about the fire in your life/On the evening news"), that's better than his crazy relationship.

John Mayer – Why Georgia Lyrics 16 years ago
I always thought it was "I am driving, 85 N." As in north on highway 85. Listening again, I guess he does softly say "up 85 in..."

I lived in Georgia in my mid 20s and I really relate to this song. I think it's about getting to an age where you always thought you would be an adult and have things figured out. Instead you have no idea if you're really doing what you should be doing, a "quarter-life crisis." You're stuck in traffic (which is awful on 85 during rush hour) and don't feel like your life is meaningful.

It's really interesting that so many people wonder if this is a love song written to someone named Georgia. In a way I think it is. Living in a place and being unsure if you're doing the right thing is like being in a relationship but you don't know if the person is really the love of your life. The way he makes the place seem like a person really makes the song cool for me.

R.E.M. – The Ascent of Man Lyrics 16 years ago
I've been into this song lately. The lyrics have a more dreamy an abstract feel to them than the rest of Around the Sun.

I love caitsith01's point about the Popeye reference. Stipe seems to really love cartoon-like stuff and this song has some cartoony images. Popeye, of course. Then, the Big Wham Bam was an Ed the Sock show (a sock puppet, not a cartoon, but still). Then, plays with words like "I'm a cactus trying to be a canoe" and "marked your chapter with a catamaran" sound like cartoon images. The part about panning for ore and gold kind of makes me think of Yosemite Sam. It seems like he's bringing up 70s rock also; Telegram Sam was a T. Rex song.

I see this song as the protagonist putting together the images and memories of cartoons and rock music from his childhood and constructing a character out of them. The character is navigating the present though and is totally confused by it.

It's crazy to read carrie713's comment. I've always thought of Henry Rollins when I've heard this song. He's from DC and, of course, writes books about himself. Then the whole "neck like a tire, iron man" sounds like him. Plus, Henry Rollins is a cool counter balance to JH's singing style.

R.E.M. – Belong. Lyrics 17 years ago
The thing I like about this song is that it doesn't have a simply positive or negative take on its characters. It brings up 2 images - the creatures gaining their freedom and the mother telling her child to "belong." It sounds like the creatures are threatening to the mother because "her world collapsed" because of them.

Taken out of context, I usually think of the command "to belong" as being negative; it's telling you to be a conformist. But, when it's in the context of a mother saying it to her child, it sounds comforting and hopeful. If I hear the word "freedom" in another context, it has positive connotations but when it's in the context of "those creatures," not even a human other, it sounds frightening.

You can't tell whether the song is on the side of belonging or of freedom though. It sounds like the mother is on the brink of a totally new world that could be horrible or wonderful for her child.
