It's about people vs society or the way religion works now. They work the same way. Most of Metallica's songs are about this. Escape, The Unforgiven, Eye of the Beholder, Leper Messiah, i think Harvester of Sorrow and most of Death Magnetic. "When the fire's dead and gone So what now? Where do I head... In the heart of feeble man Plant the seeds of my own plan" They get you while you're down or having trouble with something emotionally. "Bow down Sell your soul to me I will set you free Pacify your demons" With the constant pressure that religion or society gives you (almost every movie and popular song that's released deals with true love being the end all problem solver, also the pressure to conform), its hard to avoid something that takes the blame away so don't have to deal with it. By selling your soul, you give away your emotional freedom. "Judas lives, recite this vow I've become your new god now" This is pretty obvious if you're talking about conforming to society. If you're talking about religion, it's an ironic statement how the church plays god. The bible has been re-written many times. Before Constantine re-wrote it, it included resurrection. Now they it was god who says there's no resurrection when it was really the church. Just realize this message before you hit this point in your life. Soldier on through it alone with as little distraction as possible. The only solution that matters is your own solution. You can do it. |

I kinda think the song might be about something like a person who was maybe caged and has no idea what life is like and the speaker might be about someone who maybe obtained this person. "A canvas to paint, to degenerate," The canvas being the persons mind? That's definitely not right, but it's something to start with. |
