| The Devil Wears Prada – Hey John, What's Your Name Again? Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Okay, I've seen some descriptions and attempts at the songs meaning and most of them seem pretty close seeing as the song is almost everything you all have said. BUT the song is actually based off of Aurthur Miller's play The Crucible. It is apparent in just the name seeing as the main character in the play was named John Proctor. The play is about the Salem witch trials, which took place because of very large religious speculations caused be four young girls; "the concept of fashion is the one to blame: painting the portrait of conviction-less existence." In the play the priest actually makes the girls believe what they are doing is religiously correct, and soon the entire small town is overcome with almost a plague of accusing people of witchcraft, almost like it was in fashion. "this shall pass. megalomania. congratulations on mutilation for a life." This is obviously the first person view of John Proctor, because he says almost these exact words in the court house when his wife and him are on trial. "we all find ourselves so horribly weak. (Oh God,) here's an offering." This is refering to after John in in prison and has almost died of starvation and is very sickly. They make him sigh a document that says that he is a witch, but he refuses to sign it because his name is the one thing he has left to him and his name is an offering of his identity to god. Then they hang him... so yeah, I wrote my final paper on comparing the two and many people agreed with me because they are both highly religious. |
