I've read in interviews that Kozelek considers this his masterpiece and his most autobiographical work. The story can be put together through some interviews and the forward to Nights of Passed Over, as mentioned above. It is worth the little research involved because it serves as the context for so many of his songs, both in SKM and RHP.

This is yet another song with the perspective of someone who is looking back on a past relationship and coming to grips with its loss. The final verse is one of Kozelek's most overwhelming. Both SKM albums focus on the theme of loss and its tendency to follow us long after we have moved on.

The ghost interpretation is correct. This song represents a break from his normal approach in that he is dead, rather than writing about coping with someone else's death. What's so interesting is that even though it is written from the opposite perspective, it still carries the same themes and emotions. Lost verses is probably a metaphor for separation.

Like so many, this song is about coping with loss. Note that it depicts a sense of denial in the chorus. It's about coming to grips with a loved one's absence while a part of them follows you all of your days.

This song is unique because of its hope. There is acknowledgement of the disease and the effects. Most importantly, there is recognition of the process and support among fellow strugglers.

The woman still holds their lost relationship in high regard, despite the pain of adultey and the prophetic loss of a child. A "Dear John" letter is written from the woman to the man telling him that she is leaving him. Here the letter is written from the woman to the man telling him that she is sticking it out, though he is gone. Truly beautiful.

I believe this song is about the fact that there is a void that this person is carrying around long after it should have been filled by the relationship or long after he should have forgotten about the relationship. Either way, it's still there and it is devastating.

I don't believe that the relationship is too serious or the two are not mature enough, etc. The disfunction comes from a fundamental mismatch. Whether that is because they are in different places or have different values and expectations is up in the air. Regardless, it is about the tragedy that settling brings into a relationship. A very sad song.

I also agree that the Drummer Boy version is far better. Thing seems to be about accepting a situation and relationship for what it is, coming to grips with it's relevance in your life, then moving on.
