in one of my favorite movies one of the characters says something like 'when you sleep with someone, your body makes a promise to them whether you do or not'. so i've been thinking about what this means and how it relates to this song. i believe this is what the writer is referring to when the word promise is mentioned - "we had a promise made, four hands and then away". the heart and the mind aren't always compatible,"mind is a razorblade". i think he implies that they are under divine influence and the fact of their love is obvious (to each of them and to god) in the breif time they shared but still it isn't good enough, because the mind recognizes this affair as illogical. another thing about loving within reason - for some people it isn't possible. this song is about two people that are in love but for whatever reason they can't be together. but in those 10 days of perfect tunes everything is right and their bodies make promises to eachother that they know deep down they can't keep. it's beautiful and sad. |

i think this song is about protecting your heart. keeping your dignity but not being cowardly and afraid to love. it's about someone who keeps giving her power away. he wants to protect her but he knows there's no way she can be saved, he doesn't want to be like all the others who have failed her. he describes her heart as a "torch in the night" and then talks about hiding it in mud and leaves. it is a powerful image about guarding things that are precious to you. i can relate and i think this is a beautiful song. |
