I agree with xpsychicheartsx. I interpreted his metaphors the same way. Leonard's songs are not very literal, he uses tropes for most of everything he describes. Chilling. beautiful. Honest. |

| Oh, and the message that he sent being in a bottle in the water is also a metaphor. it doesn't mean that this was his method of sending the letters to ms. leading. As she is probably aware of his feelings. The letter in the water metaphorically represents his attempt to kill his love for her because immersion in water represents death...the next song vital vessels vindicate..he admits to his feelings resurfacing... "chances of escaping my heart are inadequate.... when all is said and done i'm left with my history." despite that he attempted to kill his feelings they have resurfaced from metaphorical water...you can also hear the sound of the shore in the beginning of vital vessel vindicates. | |

i am so relieved to hear albums that has been so well created; instrumentally, musically, lyrically, and vocally. i think to fully grasp the intended story of this song one needs to consider the lyrics and music of the albums as a whole because each song is relative to the albums as they tell this story. There is a whole slew of metaphors in this album and many of them reference the bible and ideas of sin and baptism. This is metaphorically addressed throughout the albums with different bodies of water; lakes, rivers, seas. This song in particular nears the end of the album in which the boy has already written the letter to ms. leading (the song prior to this 'dear ms. leading') In that song he states he hopes that she has gotten the message in the message that he sent. This implies she probably received and read the letter and now someone is reading it as it has washed up on shore. Like others here mentioned the keyword here is 'vicariously.' "Lips which press together, stifle, rhythmic, heavy breaths Oh how she smiles from vicarious love from the one he writes about"... This line describes the reader as she is reading it. They describe her lips as she is muttering the letter reading it to herself..."Lips which press together, stifle, rhythmic, heavy breaths" "Oh how she smiles from vicarious love from the one he writes about"...the reader is smiling from vicarious feelings of love about the one he writes about (which is ms. leading.) "Whose tears were these which ran the ink From who they bore to make this streak Where they his by chance from telling her? Or hers by chance from reading it? They could have been collective They could have been from someone else"... The person who chanced upon the letter is wondering whose tears have ran the ink on the page she is reading...she wonders were they his from telling her or were the hers from reading it or maybe they are collective(both his and hers) or maybe they are from someone else who chanced upon the letter(such as herself.) I think this song represents a point in the album where their love has washed up on the shore from being emmersed in water where it was dead and it is born again as someone reads it. which is another biblical reference and is expressed in the song with another body of water.... This is the biblical references explained... "As we are completely covered by water in the act of baptism, we symbolically die, and as we rise from the water, we symbolically rise to a newness of life. In this we associate ourselves with the death and resurrection of Jesus. " |

"Fell in another hole (For the knife, for the knife)" i think is actually...(for the night, for the night)...not for the knife, for the knife...she fell in a hole for the night because she needs money, her new-born son gives her new perspective of ..."Everything you thought you'd live and die for Every reason leading you to hear all the sounds That trickle past you introspective ear"...she has to watch out not only for herself now but also him. "An attempt to discover what's behind"....she will realize things about herself shes never noticed prior to this. "Hands conflicting clearly point their way Stunned by the sign and fearing what they say"...they (ms. terri and her son) are on a path she is conflicted about. She doesnt want to have to take the "clear" route of working as a prostitute to support them. She fears the signs that say this is what she will need to do. |

to monuments melodies...sooo sounds like the mars volta, especially the intro... Ms. terri and the flame is his mother and the man she slept with. The flame is the bastard child of the fire. "In the heat of the night, the river rendered the chance she surely needs to stay alive."...the river represents her baptism...her re-birth, she now lives on vicariously through her conceived child, the fire. She lives on through her son, as anyone with a child live on through their children. |
