Let the proof be in the pudding means basically 'I'm going to show, you, just sit back and see.' I take it from that lyric he means 'I'm going to stay sober'(sugar), 'just wait and see.'
In other words, his previous attempts at sobriety have been massive failures (hell his picture was in a Criminal Justice textbook I had), but this time is for real, just wait. |

Actually, my dad had pretty good take on this song. Its about an old man past his prime recalling the days of his peak virility. He recalls how good of a predator he was, and about how he didn't have to go looking for women, they come to him. My father says the double entendre of the song was very popular during the early jazz boom. Great way to talk about boinking without either being crude, or blatantly obvious about it. |
