Gary Jules – Mad World (Tears for Fears cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
I read a line somewhere. "The world is a mad house and the inmates are in charge." This line has been echoing over and over in my head for the past month or so. It really does feel like the entire world is speeding towards a brick wall and pressing down harder on the accelerator. And sadly, by the time most of us were born into this day in age our fates were already set in stone. And I find myself wondering what kind of cruel God granted me a life on this planet only so that I could smash into this brick wall with everyone else. I find myself feeling envious of the elderly who die in comfortable hospital beds surrounded by loved ones who mourn their passing and write beautiful eulogies for them. I wonder if I will get a death bed and if there will even be anyone left to mourn the rest of us passing.

It is in this frame of mind that I revisit this song and it fits perfectly. Going to work, seeing kids go to school, all this stuff seems even more pointless given the dire situation our race has been put in. The singer of this song is mourning it all with me and that seems to be the most anyone can offer me at this late stage in the game. Just mourn with me.

Colin Hay – I Wish I Was Still Drinking Lyrics 17 years ago
To me this song is not about alcoholism or a strict attack on Bush. This song has a broader scope. It is him seeing the mounting problems in the world and finally giving up and becoming resigned to the fact that they can't be fixed or avoided and instead he now wishes he could just have a drink so he can enjoy the time he has left as best as he can and forget about the "time that's running out".
