props on the interpretation. i actually don't think you were hard on West. I thought it was quite insightful. he is talented (not impressive) but so are a whole lot of others. so actually i was glad to hear that perspective. and, yes, i do wish you would have expanded on lil wayne and eminem. by far the 2 best people in the game right now. i do have a comment, i might be way off on this but when i first heard this song i thought Em was saying "packing stadiums" instead of "back in stadiums." |

By far the most emotional song on Tigerlily. The lyrics and music are perfect. Experience and surviving are the main theme. |

This is such a great song. I wish someone would just state what they think the "word" is. I some posters have stated 'afraid,' 'depressed,' and so forth. I'm a little on the fence about this song. I feel like it could go either way. A: being in love, and wanting someone. Or B: depressed. However, the lyrics lend themselves best to the latter. So my guess for the word would be: disappearing. Any thoughts? |

gosh i first heard this song and was wondering why is Karen's voice so sad. what a melody! this is probably one of my new favorite songs of theirs...and the lyrics, how appropriate to the music, it is rare that i can say that the lyrics are perfectly married to the music. |

she is rather complacent in the darkness that follows broken love than to hold onto the (un)-promised love that has lead to her current predicament. |

on your note wasnotwas...i would say that love is an addiction also, as well as vise versa -- but you've already explained that. so i think that all addictions: love, gambling, drugs...all good to write music about. |

I seriously did not like this song for the longest time, and it had nothing to do with the song itself, but really just the title. Nonetheless, i kept returning to the song because melodically it was very beautiful. After many a listen i gave more weight to the lyrics, and like the "producer" that gives Merchant that comment, i myself cannot get those Columbine boys out of my head.
But my interpretation was not really the fascination with the deviant individual but rather those we praise or set on alters, and then the "killing spree" is a signifier of disappointed whether literally a killing of human bodies or killing of our souls. So that's how the Columbine boys fit in here, praised and or adored by their parents until the final act of absolute disappointment. |

I'm surprised that this song did not get any radio air play, or media attention for that matter. But then again this was Merchant's last album on a huge record label and most songs; even the singles just kind of were swept by. Nonetheless Motherland is a great album, and this is one of my favorite songs on it. And yes, it is about lynching...Merchant has an amazing way of textually painting a scenario with her incredible lyrics. |

I agree with you Kdbates. I think this song is more about someone she is trying to get (a crush) then actually a past, or current lover. There are many lyrical (text) indicators that would lead the listener to believe this. Nonetheless this is a wonderfully written song! |
