Like everyone else on earth who hears this song, I thought it was literally about sex changes. But after listening to it about three trillion times, I started to picture it a little differently. To me it seems to be talking about the repercussions of having sex, namely pregnancy. How it’s a shock and surprise at first, and people treat it like a bad thing. (Your life will be one never-ending “hope you're feeling better”) And how most teenage girls think of it as something cute and fun, not as an actual living thing (it might be nice to look at don't forget you're stuck with it tomorrow). Then the having to tell people about the pregnancy (you're big enough to stop pretending you'll start to really show within a week or so) Verse four goes on with the whole playing house concept without realizing the actual graveness of the situation. (today's a very special day and how you'd love to have a little thing with which to play) Then the telling of the child’s father, where he’s more likely to deny it or shrink away from the responsibilities (boys will be boys will be boys will be boys will be boys will be boys will be girls with no warning) Then it goes into the possibility of getting rid of the child (no second thoughts the knife is nearing you'll never hear the little pitter patter pitter patter of this little feat of engineering )and the almost detached way the boy can be in the situation (of course I love you and of course it's what's inside that matters, but I think the whole charade is ending) And after all the that, the girl in question finds herself in the same situation all over again, pretending to be in love and giving it away in exchange for pretty words. ( but while you happen to be here why don't you whisper all those sweet forever’s in my ear stiff upper lip for all this sorrow) Uh, yeah, that’s what I got out of it. |
