wow... i'm not the only person who thinks of video games when i hear this song. hahaha. on the lines of a meaning, i don't know. i'm pretty sure the whole album of the fragile is about drugs. being high. coming down at the end. that's a complication. and it blends really good into the begining "please", which i conclude is about never wanting to come down from a high. but i guess i should talk about that in the "please" thread. |

i guess if you take the lyrics for the raw value of them, it suggests strongly about suicide. (not that that isn't what it's about. it could be. none of us were in trent's mind when he wrote it...) but isn't the whole album the fragile about addiction to drugs? i always thought this song was about the narrarator coming down from a serious high, and needing more. the "you" he's refering to is the drug, i always thought. coming down from a high like that feels like drowning. "the destiny i've chose, all becoming clear." he can't stop. if you listen to "la mer" right before that, it almost sounds like soaring. like forgetting everything around you and just feeling good. like being high. so many of the other songs on the fragile to me also refer to addiction. and when the first half of it is over you get to "the great below", which is at the bottom of that high, and needing more. "i can still feel you even so far away." basically, "i've come down, but i remember what it feels like to be high and i need more now." even so, it's still a beautiful song, and can be taken in so many ways. all of us have our own way to relate to it, and tune our own experiences in to relate to almost any NIN song. |
