Jarvis Cocker – Caucasian Blues Lyrics 15 years ago
Rich white folks who never gave a fuck about anyone else now want sympathy because 'times are tough' for them finally. Jarvis gives them a nice send off at the end of the song:

::I've heard it said that you are hung like a white man
::You're yesterday's news, you've got so much to lose

Now he uses this last line in the chorus like it will be an afterthought for the entitled bastards when the song's over...

::You got them Caucasian Blues again

Anyone who seriously tries to dissect this song gets a swift kick in the balls.

No Age – Teen Creeps Lyrics 17 years ago
Seems to be about not wanting to be like the negative forces that are surrounding you. "Teen creeps get what they want and me I won't end up like them at all."

This might be the only song I'd ever sing for Karaoke. You could get the entire room laughing hysterically.

My Morning Jacket – I Will Be There When You Die Lyrics 17 years ago
Describes a perfect expression of love without being cliche or contrived. It's songwriting like this why this band is one of the best.

My friend just got married and they had their first dance to this song. It's quite the tear-jerker.

Bob Dylan – Mr. Tambourine Man Lyrics 17 years ago
Dylan said the song was inspired by a large tambourine owned by Bruce Langhorne.

"On one session, Tom Wilson had asked [Bruce] to play tambourine," Dylan recalled in 1985. "And he had this gigantic tambourine...It was as big as a wagonwheel. He was playing, and this vision of him playing this tambourine just stuck in my mind."

Langhorne confirmed that he "used to play this giant Turkish tambourine. It was about [four inches] deep, and it was very light and it had a sheepskin head and it had jingle bells around the edge - just one layer of bells all the way around...I bought it 'cause I liked the sound...I used to play it all the time."

Bob Dylan – Bob Dylan's 115th Dream Lyrics 17 years ago
115th Dream seems like a pretty appropriate title for the song. It's got that surreal element to it, while being a sly critique of American culture at the same time. I love the fact that it's just Dylan telling a story and there's no choruses at all, just him wailing on his harmonica.

Bob Dylan – Maggie's Farm Lyrics 17 years ago
Ah, Dylan's F You, to the slavish expectations of the protest-song folk music crowd. The best we can do to honor the spirit of this song is to play it as loud and as electrified as possible to stick it to the pretentious old-folkies who turned up their noses at Dylan.

TV on the Radio – Lover's Day Lyrics 17 years ago
From an interview with Rolling Stone.

Kyp Malone: I wrote it specifically to be a gender-neutral, sex-positive love song so anyone can apply it any aspect of life. But any time my daughter hears it, she says, “That’s for Jessie.” She’s my girlfriend. Sex is the spice of life, you know. It’s how we all got here. A lot of songs that are sex positive are very predatory — it’s within the binary of gender politics. That’s boring to me. It’s not reflective of the world we live in.

TV on the Radio – Shout Me Out Lyrics 17 years ago
Sounds like it should be...

"Storm, cast me out"
"Warn, passengers hide"
"and it's broken your atmosphere"
"Lord, if you've got lungs, come on, shout me out"

Also, this chunk seems to be missing:

"I know the freeze hasn't thawed
and it's putting your love into action, dear
It's off in the breeze and it's shifting degrees
and it's opened your atmosphere"

I can't find any official lyrics, can anyone confirm?

TV on the Radio – Family Tree Lyrics 17 years ago
Oh, forbidden love. I like tragicweek's idea that what's buried under the tree keeps it alive and well. If we tolerate the hate and violence of "old ideas whose time has come" we are only keeping those antiquated ideas alive and well to spur more hate and violence.

TV on the Radio – Stork and Owl Lyrics 17 years ago
This might be about dying and not being afraid of it.

It could also be about discovering something inside yourself ("that caged fire thing") and something about a candle of life soothing bruises. The message isn't too clear.

TV on the Radio – Dancing Choose Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree it seems like social commentary.

The guy he's talking about gets all his ideas from the newsmedia, reciting their positions but not realizing that he's not ultimately in control of anything. He also spends frivolously through hard economic times like there's no tomorrow until... "more bowls and more cups and the riot for the last hot meal erupts."

("Now I'm no mad man, but that's insanity," indeed.)

The refrain seems like a reflection on the letdowns of his life. "Drowning butterflies," beautiful things (hopes and dreams) destroyed. Palette turns to monochrome, bright future looking bleak.

The second verse seems to elaborate how this guy is just a shill for the powers that be. "And the half-hearted hologram, posed for the party..." He's got his eye on authority and he's not down for freedom. He's an "angry young mannequin" and a "foam-injected Axl Rose" a propped-up, empty figure of feigned outrage, but in reality just a shill.

(Sarcastically, he's also "American apparently" when his actions aren't the least bit American in principle)

My Morning Jacket – Highly Suspicious Lyrics 17 years ago
@balpo - "dot your i's" means to make sure you take care of all your loose ends, like a teacher telling her students to literally make sure they have all their letter i's dotted before they turn in their work,

The song's definitely about a drug-induced paranoid freakout and the "highly suspicious" parts are meant to be like British Constables pounding at the door, either in reality or in the person's head. I'm not the biggest fan of the song compared to the rest of their catalogue but it is different, I'll give them that.

My Morning Jacket – Tonight I Wanna Celebrate with You Lyrics 17 years ago
This one is a lot more minimalist compared to some of their other songs with extended solos and fast drumming. I think it makes for a good balance.

The lyrical message likewise seems pretty simple: wanting to spend time with someone you are close to despite how jaded you've grow towards other things in your life,

My Morning Jacket – Golden Lyrics 17 years ago
TennesseeFire, you nailed it, and very eloquently too I might add.

One part I always identified with that wasn't really part of the song's original message was "people always told me that bars are dark and lonely..."

It's something a lot of people can relate too, not just touring musicians. Like how after your 21st birthday, you want to go out to the bar night after night as much as you can, but a few years go by and you start to become tired of spending all your waking nights there. Eventually they stop being this new and exciting thing and they just end up making "the time disappear."

Like I said, not the main focus of the song, but it's something I related to when I heard that part.

I like the first two lines. A nice reference to On the Road without being cheesy, and a perfect way to start a song as far as I'm concerned. I really do love that book.

heh, I've been to a few festivals that had chill out tents for the people who get too strung out, but I've never heard it used as a setting for a love/hook-up story before. Craig Finn's is one damn creative songwriter.

The Hold Steady – How a Resurrection Really Feels Lyrics 17 years ago
This is a great ending. The song is so triumphant and it's nice that Holly gets this happy ending considering all the shit she went through on the album.

"They got a mural up on East 13th / That said Halleluiah rest in peace." adds to the "Father can I tell your congregation how a resurrection really feels?" line nicely. She was "gone" now she's come back to her previous wholesome, positive life, resurrected in a sense.

For some reason I like the last 3 lines as well. "Holly was a sexy mess / She looked strung out but experienced / So we all got kind of curious." Kinda implies there's more to the story than what we were told. A good way to end the album, no?

Conor Oberst – Souled Out!!! Lyrics 17 years ago
My favorite song on the album. Seems to be about not worrying about constantly aspiring to some lofty goal (like getting into heaven). The sold/souled play on words is pretty clever.

Conor Oberst – I Don't Want to Die (In the Hospital) Lyrics 17 years ago
Great song. One thing I like is how the lyrics start off I don't "wanna" die in this hospital, then at the end it's I ain't "gonna" die in this hospital. It shows his frustration growing and his resolve getting stronger. And agreed HomerunHenry, the Morphine line is the best part of the song.
