The "little black book" is a black phone book, in which you write out the phone numbers people you know. Commonly men have them and in it are the numbers of several women the sleep with. tl;dr version: phone book of all the numbers of people she sleeps with |

Well, I am going to go over each stanza individually, ten give my overall impression on the song.. Running for her life The dark rain from her eyes still falls Breathtaking butterfly Chose a dark day to live The woman is obviously running away from someone and crying. The dark rain refers to eye makeup(I think it's called eyeshadow) which runs when tears fall. The 'breathtaking butterfly' is the woman. she is breathtakingly beautiful, like a butterfly. 'Chose a dark day to live' foreshadowing of what's going to happen to her, and it's not going to be pretty. I also believe that this stanza is spoken from the chaser's point of view, as the whole song seems to be spoken from his point of view Save one breath for me The one who is chasing her speaking, perhaps wanting to suck the last breath out of her in a kiss A loner longing for The cadence of her last breath This is describing the chaser, he is a loner, who wants a kiss. to me, the cadence of her last breath, is the split second before a kiss, when you hold your breath. The loner is in love plain and simple. Why do I miss someone I never met, with bated breath I lay Seawinds brought her to me a butterfly, mere one day miracle of life And all the poetry in the world Finally makes sense to me Spoken from the loner's perspective. he has never met her, only watched/stalked her from afar. 'seawinds brought her to me' she traveled to where she is now by sea, the sails caught the wind, and brought her to where the man was. when he first saw her, he fell in love 'all the poetry in the world finally made sense to me' is a way of saying that. 'a butterfly' refers to the woman, a second time in this song. 'mere one day, miracle of life.' is saying that what he has planned, is going to take one day, and bring him to life metaphorically. The poetry making sense to him also represents him getting what he wants, her "love". I personally think he rapes her, confusing intimacy with love. Save one death for me Once again the speaker talking. he wants to have her death (or to translate into other words: wants to kill her) because the deed he did is done. he got what he wanted, and now has to dispose of her Put to rest all that's not life Drink for beauty and fill my blank page this is him speaking to her. 'put to rest all that's not life' is him telling her that he is going to kill her now. 'drink for beauty' poison he forces her to drink, and she dies young, preserving her beauty. 'fill my blank page' he is a poet, this love he experienced is his muse, poets often use their lovers as a muse so, overall, I see this as a dark song about a man, who falls in love with the new girl in town. he then stalks her, never talking to her, instead pining over her. one day, after planning it out, he goes after her. she runs away, because he is going to attack her, he catches her, rapes her, and then kills her. He perceives this to be what love is. |
