Leonard Cohen – Avalanche Lyrics 15 years ago
a lot of people are pointing to christian symoblism but i can see classical allusions too- hephaestus, the greek god of metalworking (and his equivelants in other cultures- vulcan to the romans, tyr to the vikings, tiw to the saxons etc. etc.) was a cripple, and lived and worked underground. and in greek myth he was married to the aphrodite the god of love who was constantly unfaithful and caused him a lot of grief- which goes with the atmosphere of jealous, love-hate emotions at many points in the song; 'it is your turn, beloved, it is your flesh that I wear.'
so one way of looking at it is cohen using the crippled smith god character as his narrative voice, after all he is a 'word-smith', and i'm sure he's a very eriudite dude who's probably been influenced by similar use of classical characters in poetry; most famously by the romantics and victorians, tennyson's 'ullyses' for example.

Tool – Jimmy Lyrics 17 years ago
just a thought about the idea of 'hold your light' someone mentioned on page 1- ive read that several of the songs reference jungian psychology, and in jungs analysis the ego is seen as the 'light of consiousness', as opposed to the subconcious 'shadow'. so perhaps the meaning is that the young MJK had his ego damaged when he was 11, leading to fears of being overcome by his shadow. this links to the idea of individuation & evolution explored in 46 & 2, where the ego and shadow are transcended to form the true self. smart stuff, inspirational.

The Stooges – 1969 Lyrics 17 years ago
sorry to go all in-depth revisionist history on you but...i doubt its iggy saying that 'music was shit and boring' or that punk wasnt around or whatever, given their place in the detroit scene with the MC5, the up etc. plus you can't talk about 'all the hippy shit' in this context when you think about the white panther party & all the other militant 'yippie' groups linked to the music scene. the punk music/culture evolved from the angrier elements of the hippie counter culture, it didnt just spring from nowhere.

aaaaanyways. fucking excellent song.
