Modest Mouse – Black Cadillacs Lyrics 17 years ago
i also think the death theme fits this full album. in satin in a coffin it could very well be his mother "you were laying on the carpet like satin in a coffin...are you dead or are you sleeping...god i sure hope you are dead" this album seems like brock has conflicting thoughts about his mothers death (or whever it was that died) in that he hates them for whatever they did to him yet they were obviously a close figure of importants and he still feels strange sadness. either that or its a very dark way of saying i was supposed to love you but im just glad your dead...creepy

what i dont like is that everyone either thinks the songs are about relationships (which i personaly dont think modest mouse would waste their time with) or the band selling out or sticking to its roots. i've been to many other modest mouse songs and these are all the same guesses by everyone. i think honesly that 80% of everything they write is "inside writing" and that it has a lot of significant value to the band but we dont know much about it. (like portugals songs use weird imagery from alaska that doesnt mean much to one of us.) just a thought

MGMT – Weekend Wars Lyrics 17 years ago
i like the line "Was I? I was to lazy to bathe
Or paint or write or try to make a change.
Now I can shoot a gun to kill my lunch
And I don't have to love or think too much" it makes me think that he's thinking back to before this big war disaster (like a nuke) and he's realsing that his problems were so small and now he doesnt have to love or think too much cause he's all alone...loe the song

Portugal. The Man – Chicago Lyrics 17 years ago
i did some research on te great chicago fire (which is what the song is about) and i found a few good things. i think that the start of the song is about corrupt government officials "spitting taxes and unwanted tasks" setting high taxes and extorting businesses for protection (wich happened a lot) and the "we say, send me to the battle please sir!" i really like the word "sir" it shows that this person is talking to a superior. at first i thought this was a cop talking to a higher officer but then i thought what if it was a young man (maybe 13?) asking his father if he can "go to the battle field" i think the "battle field" is portugals interp. of fed up buisness owning family ppl going to burn down the police station (which is perhaps where potugal belived the fire started) next "Chicago is dancing in xylophone laughter
We say burn the fucker down
Burn the motherfucker down" dancing is like going crazy, xylophone laughter is a very pretty way of saying cazily laughing, the reasong everyone is going crazy is because of all the looting that went on at the time. when the fire broke lose all hell did as well. ppl went crazy. then it says "we say buring this motherfucker down" i like how it says "we say" it makes me think it was the same kids that wanted to join in the fight. (perhaps when the parents went to comfront the corrupt cops they were shocked to see the building on fire and the kids are the ones saying burn! burn! the last part is my favorite. when the song goes quite and its a light piano. i can see it as if it were a movie. (just like in saving private rhyan when tom hanks is shooting at the tank with no sound) i can just see the chief of police having a slo-mo moment. i can see his face in disgust looking around as the piano plays. i think that he says "please, pleae speak up i cant hear with these clouds in my ears" to a police chief he was requestion help from. the reason he couldnt hear? perhaps the fire blew up an oil barrel close to him? perhaps the smoke? then he says "system down, i doubt we'll get through" in what i read they ran out of water and had to let the fire keep buring. (sytem down?) then when it says "send the money for the cattapillars to intertain" this seems to be the hardest to understand and the most like jibberish but i think he's asking for reasorces and the cattapllars are the water hoses (the thick ones look a lot like a cattapillar. thats all i got....just my look on it. sorry about the length, its late

ok i could see the divorce thing a little but a few things didnt quite make sences but i love brompton's thought that its a metaphor for dying. you have great evidence and the part about fearing sleeping in the box really jumps out at me with the coffin theory. the end needs a little more help but it fits better than the divorce ending. im not so sure about the conductor being a preacher. maybe he just playes the role of "death" and you are on the train to heaven (or hell) and sending love and happiness to the next car could be he is reasuring everyone that they will be fine because most would probably be in a panic (that is if they died suddenly and were not sure if they were alive) those are my thoughts. and true it might be drugs, (which im sure they were super high when they wrote it) but i used to do a lot of shit too and i've gone on "god trips" and the things you think about are beyond your sober mind. it is possable for portugal trip in metaphor ha ha
