my bad, anandatalia, i did come off a little strong in my comment. its just when i 1st came to this page and seen everybody completely missing the point (in my opinion) on all these songs, i was kinda shocked. i did get a lil condescending though. in all fairness though, the site is about song meanings. you and others may have opinions on what it means, but as for me i can say with 99% accuracy that i know what a good percentage of gnarls barkley songs mean. you dont really have to be the artist or the producer to know what "we are the champions" by Queen is all about. its self explanatory. thats how these songs are for me. maybe someday after you've realized that there's no lasting happiness or peace in physical existence, the words "you cant win child, we've all tried to, you've been lied to, its already inside you" will make perfect sense to you. then again a lot of people live out there lives chasing illusions til the day they die....which is okay too. everyones different like you said. either way though it is open for interpretation, and if you believe it means something else with any real level of certainty then i respect that, and i'd be more than open to hear your take. if you dont have a definitive opinion, then perhaps you will forgive the condescending tone of my original post and try to absorb what i said and see if it dont actually make sense. regardless, i appreciate your comment. PEACE! |

| lol you hit the nail on the head kuckunniwi. we're kindred spirits. i had similar experiences with "crazy" and "going on" as well. both of those songs hit me like a wave when i 1st heard them and i at once picked up on what he was saying. i wish everyone else could see it, cuz it's really beautiful what he's putting out there for people if theyre receptive to it. i loved your "keep running" line too, you totally get "it" lol. youre awesome. thanks for your cool reply and keep spreading the message on the dangers of not running!! lol PEACE!!! | |

if you listen to both albums and you have any notion of spirituality, truth or knowledge of Self at all, the same message that i talked about in this song is in nearly all his songs. its practically undeniable in the line "you cant win...we've all tried to, you been lied to, it's already inside you". this is spiritual truth at its finest. the part where he's says "yea its still the same, cant you feel the pain when the needle hits the vein, aint nothin like real thing....ive seen it once before and oh its somethin else good god", he's obviously referencing drug usage but you gotta put it into context with the rest of the song. check it out....when you shoot heroin or something similar, its a great feeling -- not a bad one. so why does he ask "cant you feel the pain when the needle hits the vein", then? he's saying dont you see that this temporary pleasure that you're deriving from this is going to end in pain? then he follows that up with "aint nothing like the real thing". this means you'll never get the happiness youre looking for through some drug induced high. the "real thing" he referrences is what i eluded to earlier -- Truth; knowledge of Self; union with God. he finishes with "ive seen it once before and oh it's something else, good God". right there he's saying he's experienced that moment of clarity briefly and can vouche for the fact that drugs wont get you there and they dont compare to the peace of that experience. he mentions this experience in the song "crazy" when he says "i remember when i lost my mind; there was something so pleasant about that space. even your emotions have an echo in so much space". he's describing that moment of clarity. he's not saying he lost his mind like he went crazy; this is evidenced by what he says after he says he lost his mind. if you go crazy, youre probably not going to be in a pleasant place. when he says he lost his mind, he means that the never-ending, repetitious chatter of thoughts that usually plague most of us ceased for a period of time, and he was able to perceive what lies within us when that chatter stops. this is the heart of religion/ spirituality (though its been well distorted) and is talked about by every enlightened being from the beginning of time -- from Jesus to Buddha. they all talked about meditation and finding a way to slip into that silence where you can unite with your source; the underlying essence of life....who we are in reality. im not trying to sound like a scholar here, i dont even attempt to decipher most songs. but this subject i know well, and several of his songs make unmistakable referrences to spiritual truths. if you dont believe that, do some research on ceelo. he openly admits he's always been a spiritual guy. he was raised that way and its been a part of his music career dating back to the goodie mob. Peace. |

| LOL , ok kids....ONCE AGAIN, he's not talking about drugs or pedophilia, he's talking about running from your SELF. when he says "you can't win child, we've all tried to, you've been lied to, it's already inside you" , he's saying all the things that you've been taught to do to "win" in life: chase money, success, religious salvation etc. are all leading you to a dead end. they bring you temporary happiness and can't substitute for REAL contentment/happiness which is abiding in 'yourself'. this is where the line "either you run right now or you best get ready to die" comes in. here he's saying if you dont KEEP running away from yourself and continue to take refuge in your false sense of identity, ie - name, career, skin color, ethnicity, social standing, educational backround, likes/dislikes, religious beliefs etc etc, you're going to realize that everything that you took 'yourself' to be up til that point is nothing more than your own mental projection, and who you thought you were is going to "die". he's pretty much poking fun at the inability of people to stop and realize that all this running theyre doing isnt getting them anywhere, and he's urging everybody to continue to flee from themselves because the truth of who/what you are is going to be disasterous to "you". i said good day sir ! | |
| Gnarls Barkley – The Boogie Monster Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| wow you guys seem REEEAAAALLLLLY lost on this one. the meaning of the song is plain as day. the boogie monster is YOU. it waits til the midnight hour to come to torture me for the wrong ive done - this is refering to the 'ego' that we all have that is constantly judging ourselves and others. it waits til youre all alone at night to review your 'progress' and make sure you know how it feels about the way you're living your life. if it sounds close to schizophrenia, thats because in a sense most everybody is, because WE ALL take that voice in our heads to be "us"... ya know the one that narrates our lives? plans out our days? decides how its going to deal with things that pop up? decides how we're going to respond to people or situations that offend us, tells us how to act, dress, talk, behave and present ourselves to the world? he used to wonder why this boogie monster looked familiar, until he realized ....IT WAS A MIRROR! the whole time the boogie monster was HIM, or what he took to be 'him'. which was nothing more than a collection of thoughts that he wrongly identified as 'himself'. the part where he says "i'd kill it but its already dead" means that the 'ego' doesnt even exist, it has it's existence through US, and without our involvement and attachment to the ramblings of the mind, it disappears and loses it's grasp on us. now im sure alot of people won't get what im saying, but i ASSURE YOU, it's accurate. if you do a little research into yourself, and stay attentive while your mind is doing what it does, you'll notice a good deal of its' time is spent creating scenarios and situations to judge and feel superior to - this includes "you", who will take alot of punishment yourself, because as you judge others, you also judge yourself. this is why you have so many people who love to get drunk and high and all the rest, to QUIET that thought process that's with us allday long, critiqueing every last detail. and THIS is why cee-lo wanted the sun to rise, because when he's all alone, he has to take the brunt of the ego's criticism when he's by himself and nobody is around to put on a show for or to judge. most all of cee-los' songs have this same message, but people arent on this level so they think he's just a weird guy who makes interesting music. it goes a bit deeper unfortunately, sorry to disappoint. think on THAT while youre laying in bed tonight. ;-) | |
| Gnarls Barkley – Would-Be Killer Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| 1st off i really dont think he's sayin "high balancing ballet" ....i think he's sayin "im balancing barely". but i think the whole meaning of the song comes down to the line where he says "hurt people..hurt people", i dont think he's saying that you should hurt people, i'm pretty sure he's saying people that are hurt end up hurting others. it makes sense when he follows it up with 'ive been entered by evil so someone best love me right now'. he's sayin hurt people hurt people, and im feelin hurt so someone better unhurt me or im gonna hurt YOU! ya heard? | |
