Billy Bragg and Wilco – Ingrid Bergman Lyrics 11 years ago
For over a decade I thought this was the sweetest song of yearning about someone you could never have. One exhausted night during the tail end of a very long road trip, this number came up and it suddenly became obvious. Easily the classiest song about an imaginary hand job ever.

The Wallflowers – Love Is a Country Lyrics 12 years ago
"Now her ring's on the seat riding shotgun next to my hat."

A few years ago I went though a painful divorce. I was living in Montana at the time and needed to get away, so I got into my car and just drove. I ended up near the Canadian border in a little town named Havre. The first time I heard this song I was on my way to Bear Paw Battlefield, the place where Chief Joseph surrendered. I was emotionally exhausted, and my wedding ring was on my passenger seat next to my fucking Stetson. The lyrics hit me like a ton of bricks and I rolled my window down and chucked my ring out the window. It was liberating.

Paul McCartney, Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic – Cut Me Some Slack Lyrics 12 years ago
Sir Paul McCartney? Fronting Nirvana? I think Kurt would be beaming. Is there anyone out there with a better Little Richard howl than Paul? This song just makes me happy. Well played, Dave.

Neko Case – The Pharaohs Lyrics 12 years ago
Its not unrealistic expectations of men she is singing about. Its about the disappointment of marrying at a young age while she still had an idealized, naive, view of love, and of how her life would be.

The Hold Steady – Stuck Between Stations Lyrics 17 years ago
As some one who spent time my summers in SD, and MN, fell in love with a MN girl, worshipped Jack Kerouac, and loved John Berryman growing up, I feel like this band is everything I would write about. There songs are so personal to me,and I have this emotional connection to them. I don't think I'm the only one, Hold Steady fans are a bit over-the-top. For my money, this is the best band in America right now. Cannot wait to see them both nights in Seattle!

The Hold Steady – Constructive Summer Lyrics 17 years ago
I turned 30 in August 2008, and this song reminds me of the summers I spent on my family's Indian Reservation in South Dakota; listening to my favorite bands; D4, Iggy Pop, Bruce Springsteen, The Clash, and drinking beers. I feel like this song was (literally) written to me. There was a water town north of town where I used to watch storms come in. It was amazing. Coming from Seattle, I really never got the chance to see thunderstorms like that. God, I fucking love The Hold Steady.

Tom Petty – Wildflowers Lyrics 17 years ago
I didn't know I was in love with one girl until she told me she told me she wanted this to play at her funeral. Such a great song and so true about how I felt about that girl.

The Jayhawks – Blue Lyrics 17 years ago
This song reminds me of a girl I fell for a long time ago. We started to hang out together after our other friends at our job quit or got fired. All of a sudden the only people in our group of friends was us and we fell hard for each other. She out this on a mixtape for me and I have loved The Jayhawks ever since. One of the most underrated bands of all time.

Death Cab for Cutie – Summer Skin Lyrics 17 years ago
This song reminds me of this girl, Marnie, I fel in love with over the course of a summer over a decade ago. It was so innocent and didn't work, but I think of it as one of the last 'pure' moments of my love life. There was no agenda, we just fell in love.

Death Cab for Cutie – What Sarah Said Lyrics 17 years ago
On a personal level, I hope that when its my time, I don't go in a hospital. They are such cold, undignified places. Not that I have earned a dignified death yet, but beng in a hospital would be terrible.

Conor Oberst – Moab Lyrics 17 years ago
I think he is just singing about the healing powers involved in taking a good road trip. It is such a classically American song, the opn road, driving to the desert, my last great road trip was to canyon country around Moab. Another great song.

Billy Bragg and Wilco – Ingrid Bergman Lyrics 17 years ago
This is such a simple beautiful song about a girl you could never get. Not to be smug, but the girl I thought about when I heard this song, I married.

If there was justice in the world, Woody Guthrie would be mentioned in the same breath as Bob Dylan, Craig Finn, Townes Van Sant, and Bruce Springsteen in the list of great American songwriters.

One of his best poems....

Billy Bragg and Wilco – At My Window Sad and Lonely Lyrics 17 years ago
A few years ago I was a fire lookout in Montana and my girlfriend was living in Alaska for the summer. I only got mail every few weeks by mule train and that was my only communication with the outside world. Summers in a fire lookout can be quite lonely, nothing but thousands of hours by yourself (literally).

My particular fire lookout looked like the bridge of my uncle's fishing vessel and during storms, it had the feel of a ship at sea. Oddly enough, this song helped me get through the times when I missed my girlfriend the most.
