you guys, not every song on Black Gives Way to Blue is about Layne Staley!! geez. In my opinion, the song seems to be about someone who is guarded and wont let others in. Someone who likes be alone and takes "comfort" in it. Towards the end, however, it seems to be about how dying for a cause shouldnt have to happen, even if it is a good cause - "Damn it all if blood you spill turn the grass more green". because he says "the blood you spill" this gives me the impression of dying while fighting...not dying from drug overdose.
Not every song on this album is about Layne. How would that be moving forward if every song was about him?? |

i dont know man, the new alice in chains isnt a "Layne Staley tribute band". why else do u think they took a 7 year hiatus? i think they want to move forward and just make good music like they used to. if layne knew he was going to die, i can guarentee you he wouldve said "dont make a bunch of songs about me" |

Wow, i really dont think this song is about addiction you guys.
I think the song is a commentary on the lower forms of society such as theives, murders, and other immoral people and how we can become them. "Life damaged gives in to crime". The song tries to make sense of their behavior, because sometimes we stoop to low levels when we are desperate. "looking in view too long on the outside, desperate plans make sense of the low life". We spend most of our time on the outside of immoral behavior, looking in on it (for example the news).
"These things I hate in you, Also reflect it seems" When you become desperate enough, you may do the same things as people you hate. Your behavior reflects.
watching the music video provides insight too, as it shows an older, religious man, thinking about rape and molestation, then punishing himself with a whip. it also shows a girl becoming so desperate because she hates her body image that she tries committing suicide.
basically i think the song is about how everyone has the potential to become what you hate. whether it is a small or large potential, that is just your personality. it is also about realizing why bad people do bad things |

this song is so incredibly sad. just imagine looking into someone's eyes, thinking that person was completely sincere and true, then only to find out later it was all untrue. |

from what ive heard, herion makes everything seem really bright. maybe thats why he says "let the sun never blind your eyes". i kind of doubt it tho. i think the song is more towards the media and bullshit stories |

I agree 100%. the radio stations ruined Sittin' at a Bar too. but i feel rehab sold out on that song when they made a "remix" of it. that remix is so NOT their style and u know they only did it so the song would get more air play |

one who doesn't care about their health, the bad things that they are doing to themselves, or just in general should not live. Why live if you dont care about anything? I suppose Layne felt this way at times, whether it was from harmful use of drugs, rejection, or depression. Once you release your demons, you can see that there is a point in caring and living. Its sad Layne never got to that stage. |

i wonder if this song refers to an actual event that happened. why would you approach a woman if you dont want to be anything like her? |

its obviously about Nick Jonas because in the music video she holds up a picture of him and her with his face taped over. its obvious its him. i hate to admit it, but i like this song because it represents innocent puppy "love". this young girl has no idea what love really is. its kind of cute to think back on how things like this were all u had to worry about. |

its about ending a relationship even though you didnt want to. like seeing things getting bad so u just break up with the girl before she breaks up with you. thats what he means by "i hurt myself when i shut this all away". its also about feeling like crap and not having anyone to talk to about your problems. complete lonliness. i feel this all the time, like no one can hear me as im screaming on the floor. i can relate to this song so much. beautiful song |

i think this song is about how fake a lot of people are in this world. he wants the apocalypse to come and just destroy everything (wash away the rain), because even the rain doesnt have the power to wash away all fake people in this world.
i really dont think its all about drugs |

Ok this is my first ever comment, so here it goes. I believe this song was written about one simple emotion: being mistreated. "I throw away everything that you say. erase everything that you fake" to me this means he is taking a bunch of verbal crap from someone but just "throws it away" to make things better. He mentally erases every fake thing this person does also. Maybe he is really physically attracted to this woman, but she has a horrible personality, so he tries to just ignore that part. I can relate to that.
I love this song because its the only song ive ever heard that fades IN instead of fading out...especially at the end of an album. this totally breaks the mold, i think it was an awesome idea. And btw, fuck Rolling Stone magazine because they ripped on this album, yet it sold over 5 million copies. |
