There's a reason that part reminds you of Lord of the Flies. It's a direct allusion. This song is about finding a meaning to continue in life. Finding a reason to try, a reason to improve. |

It's pretty obvious that this song is about the violence and despair of the streets of Philadelphia and the fact that it motivated the Roots to make it big. Malik's verse especially supports the philly idea. |

Personally the idea of an immaculate conception was interesting, but it seems pretty far off. The idea of this being about the birth of rock n' roll was closer but once again not quite right. Now the Roots as we all know are anything, but mainstream. And to me this song is about how Black Thought feels about their music (at least the verses since the choruses are part of the original Cody ChestnuTT song, which makes it hard to find a consistent meaning throughout the song.) To me the idea is that music has gone mainstream, bland and predictable, and Mary represents that typical mainstream audience. Mary wants Neo-Soul because according to Black Thought hip hop hasn't innovated, and neo soul for a while was quite unoriginal. Rock, which has always been defined as a genre which evolves itself over time and changes, is no longer wanted because of its refusal to stay with a simple hook. Neo Soul is appealing to Mary because while it sounds new, its the same familiar hooks. And with it the audience (Mary) wants all that comes with the fame of not changing and just giving the audience what they want(Platinum, ice, gold). But Black doesn't want that for his music. His musical ideas (the seed) are like a child to him. He wants to impregnate the world with his ideas. He wants to innovate, much like Rock n' Roll. So to me this song is mostly about how Tariq feels about modern music and what music should be. |
