I dont belive this song is about child abuse, though it could well be about losing virginity. I think the confusion between both male and female subjects refers directly to the often confused state of mind of teenagers who feel pressured into perfoming sexually. Morrisey's voice really drives the song to give it a vicious vibe which suggests a ravenous wanting for intercourse on both parts. However, most of The Smiths songs are non-sensical and it is possible to derive any meaning from any poetically inferable score. x |

this song outlines the political message which every band should have The maccabees are very liberal in their political views and they believe everyone should like by there own book of rules "You learn right from wrong Then you write the book yourself Right the wrongs you know" not enough bands with a real political message these days the Maccabees are my favourite and i'm seeing them on the 7th :) |

| The Maccabees – Good Old Bill Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
it can only be about a train driver due to the line "I've lost all the coals" which is repeated twice in the final verse The narrator is searching for the coals in frantic hope of starting a steam engine or otherwise metaphorically reviving Bill, the subject perhaps he belives getting the steam engine running will revive his grandfather? The coals suggest to me he could not have been a pilot as planes do not run on coal. Powerful song with powerful lyrics |
