I also suspect the title "Starlings" has a double meaning: 1) The literal meaning of a cloud of birds. 2) Alluding to starlets; like a little star. The feeling of celebrity worship for a beautiful young actress. |

The introduction makes you think: "Who is this guy, and how does he have the audacity to chase after the Premier like that? No wonder his invitations are being ignored." These are exactly the feelings that he's suppressing when chasing after the woman he idolizes. His desperate yearning makes him do outrageous things. |

I think this is a fairly literal song. He's reminding people that when everything seems dark and cold, appreciate the beauty of the sun. Like day always follows night, a person's dark times will get better. He points out a number of ordinary day-to-day scenes to appreciate the bright light of the sun. Its placement as a transition from some of the darkest songs in This Delicate Thing We've Made to some more upbeat ones is brilliant. |

Agreed, this is such a beautiful song. My interpretation is that this song is aimed at someone Darren's very close with, but she's very reserved, always being careful to say the right things. He's asking her to be more open and candid with him, even if it means that she says some things that are hurtful - words like weapons. He's afraid of damaging their friendship ("this delicate thing we've made"), but at the same time he feels that the fear and existing relationship are holding them back from truly communicating ("weight above"). |
