I haven't seen the whole movie, but I think I can see how this song could've been inspired by The Specialist. Sylvester Stallone and Sharon Stone's characters in that movie are in love, but they're also both unwilling to trust each other. Stone's cold and adamant about getting the bomb specialist (Stallone) to kill some Cuban mafia members that killed her parents. (That'd explain the line "why don't you come into my barrio, we'll see if you can float", because a barrio in the states is any major Hispanic area, and the movie takes place in one: Miami.) The parts I've seen were kind of cheesy, and haha, I hear the rest isn't very good, either. "honey bee, we should be through with this, your packaged eyes, your vicious lips You could be young, but you're out of touch If this loves been done, then what's your rush?" I absolutely love the lyrics in this song, and the song itself. It's one of my favorites. I'm curious to know why they never released it except on EPs and stuff. I think the tracks that never made it on the albums are just as great. |

I feel that SteelyDanforever's interpretation is pretty spot on about a guy committing suicide over discovering that the girl, Daphne, has been in a relationship with someone else. I think Daphne's been cheating on him. Something interesting to think about: "Been bad, Saturn breaks your mind into pieces/Been bad, so you cannot find the dimensions" - the use of Saturn in this line may be because of it's meaning in astrology. Saturn is associated with things such as boundaries, restrictions, limits, responsibilities, discipline and the endurance of these elements during difficult times. It's supposed to represent someone reliable, patient, and someone more invested in something long-term and stable. When he says "Saturn breaks your mind into pieces", perhaps he thinks that Daphne has been irresponsible and that she's frustrated with the idea of having to settle down just for him (especially if their relationship has been kind of rocky). She ignored the "dimensions", or limits of their relationship by cheating on him with someone else. He wants Daphne to discover his dead body, and every time she walks into the room, she'll be breathing and moving amongst his spirit and the sadness he experienced over her. He says you "can't help but admire what a choice room this used to be", the bedroom, I'm guessing, because by this he means it is a place they both shared and have many sentimental feelings over. When he says "when you find me, let the blood drive and come and lie with me/Daphne, symmetry..." - When she sees him, he hopes that she'll see the "spots that he's given to her", blood, and come back to him realizing the consequence of her actions. What I'm curious about is this line: "Daphne you find me to put you were inside use that for my memory"... why the use of "to put you were"? It really confuses me because of how strange it sounds. Anyways, in this part of the song he's sort of asking "is my death the one thing that will finally get you to stop?" That is, assuming if "damp" is what he really says (because "damp" can mean shock, sadness, suffering, and that would definitely work here; if it just means "wet", it could be blood). The blushing ambition is her unfaithfulness, again. I'm not sure about the "I found you/I lost you" part. Perhaps his idea or impression of her kept shifting because of how untrustworthy she was? Either way, in the next part, he's feeling sorry for how he's been. He was acting kind of childish or reacting kind of foolishly or obsessively ("conditions, locations, facts) to her cheating, probably making things worse. She now has the option to forgive and forget. Now that he's gone, all that he has with him is the memory of her, but now they can no longer remember the way they used to. She'll soon start to forget, but he says "you could fall back on lust when you've learned to wait", meaning that she still should think carefully about who she chooses to be with, and learn to appreciate the person (much like you would with friends and neighbors) before just simply being lustful. SteelyDanforever brings up an interesting point about the last part. I'm not sure if he's hoping to torment her. Perhaps he wanted to end things before they got any worse, so that he could still enjoy it? Or maybe the strange glow could be some kind of epiphany that helped him come to terms with the decision to kill himself. Judging by the rest of the lyrics it just doesn't seem like he would try to torment her, just get her to change her ways. I don't know, does he really seem that vicious...? |
