this is my favorite song by COF. the imageryin the lyrics are amazing. and the emotion that goes along with it. i think you can interpret the lyrics several ways in this song. some parts like the "six feet deep is the incision" could mean actual death, or just a metaphor. but knowing COF, they are rather morbid, so i'd go with actual death, but who knows. Basically, theoughout the songss both of them are stating how they miss eachother but cannot be together, for some reason. I don't think there really is a full conclusion to this song. Maybe it's not even needed. & I also love the video for this. It's kind of cofusing with the lesbian thing, but the darkness and morbid mood to it makes it quite appealing. |

I thought this song was going to be worse than what it actually is, since Metallica hasn't put anything good out in a while. Unforgiven I - society & parents are the unforgiven Unforgiven II - his 'love' is the unforgiven Unforgiven III - himself is the unforgiven He realizes he has to forgive everyone and everything that caused this hatred in him, and he is also questioning whether he was mostly the blame for that hatred within himself aswell. "In remembrance I relive And how can I blame you When it’s me I can’t forgive?" That's a powerful line. i think that's where the meaning is in the song. THIS is the point at which he comes to the realization that he is the one who is the unforgiven. He hasn't forgave the ones who have hurt him. This sorrow and distress still haunts him and he knows that he needs to let go of that hurt to to become truely healed and happy, and the only way of doing that is to forgive. In conclusion, he wonders why he now cannot forgive himself. Metallica definately did not let me down on this song. I've tried to not compare this song to the others. I don't think there is a need to. just amazing. |

This song gives off soo much emotion. it's unreal. It makes me think of all the guys who have used me for their selfishness, and it ends up hurting me in the end. Like, i will get soo close to a guy, and i mean really personal, if you know what i mean, and then the next day or watever, if i see them in the street, they will ignore me, or they will act as if nothing happened and think of me as just another random person. It makes me feel bad about myself:( |

This song is one of my favorites, but not as good as Unforgiven. I think the meaning of this song is quite complicated actually, since he states a few times, "Or are you unforgiven too?" It's like, to whom is he speaking? Though it seems its talking about a lover, since he keeps asking questions, like at the beginning, but I don't know. But I think i agree with Rockin_Fool: "Look, Man...The guy is dead and up at the Perly Gates and he's explaining what happened in his life and all that stuff. The door opens if he is true, and he's free to go in heaven, but the door cracks open and there's no sun shinning through. The sun indicates the light from heaven. Therefore, since he sees no light, he is not going to heaven and he is unforgiven. The whole thing is a conversation with him and St. Peter at the Perly Gates. AND THE REST OF YOU ARE WRONG!" I think that is a very good theory. But all the same, I am only 16, I really don't know anything, sorry. |

This is on my list of top favorite Metallica songs, along with the second one. Though I like the first one a lot better than Unforgiven II. This song actually describes my life. As your born, your put into society and culture. Brainwashed to be what people make you to be. This song is an example of this, because the boy goes through life being who everyone else wants him to be, he cannot express his true feeling/talents etc... So eventually, he does not care anymore, and is prepairing to die an old man knowing he wasn't who he wanted to be going through his life. He has fought to be himself, but he cannot suceed. So i think apathy comsumes him. But that's just what i feel. |

This song is my favorite Metallica songs of all time. It is immensly morbid. I'm not going to state the meaning. The meaning is not complicated, obviously about not wanting to live life anymore, and so on. But it is amazingly written. The emotion in Hetfield's voice takes my breath away.
