| Iron Maiden – Afraid To Shoot Strangers Lyrics | 8 years ago |
|
The chorus "Afraid to shoot strangers" is wonderfully poignant and makes this far more subtle than most anti-war songs. From the soldier's point of view it is not his own death that causes him the most dread but the unknown (after-life) consequence of killing other people that trouble him most. The hero clearly has no fear of battle itself "it's not the fear 'cause I'd rather go now" and accepts that his life is on the line "when it comes to the time we'll be ready to die". So surely it's for good reason that this quote is cut short "Thy Kingdom Come Thy shall be done, on earth...". Is there a heaven? Can I get there if I shoot strangers ? Beautifully written lyrics and what a sound track !!! |

| Eminem – The Real Slim Shady Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I am not a rap / hip-hop fan or an Eminem fan in any way, but I find this song musically and lyrically very well constructed. I find it hilarious that someone can hear a song and summarize that they hate the artist as a person. As if everything written in the song is the story of the artist's life. Eminem is a genius at exploiting such stupidity and this is what this song is about. Eminem's fame is partly due to his talent and partly to his abiity to exploit the reactions of his audience. The fact that he manages to polarise his audience to such a great extent is proof of his talent. Without the talent, noone would even bother to comment on his songs. Respect. |

| Noir Désir – Un Jour En France Lyrics | 17 years ago |

This is the song that made me a Noir Desir fan. I was living in Paris when this was a radio hit and it blew my mind. I have found attempts at translation but none do justice to the song. This is a french song for french people and I feel us poor foreigners will never fully realise what we are missing. The lyrics of this song seem to reveal the threatening undercurrents that lurk beneath the facade of life in France, the dangerous nationalism, corrupting power of money and the disregard for the noble values of the country. The song sounds dark and threatening, like a gathering storm. Wonderful ! |

| R.E.M. – Until The Day Is Done Lyrics | 17 years ago |

No doubt that it's about the harm done to the US and it's people by the Bush admin. The album notes differ "Providence blinked, facing the SON". A typo or a clever play on words ? Providence = a manifestation of God's foresightful care for His creatures. Is God shocked by his own creation ! "What have I done?" Or is this the deceived voter who must suffer under this ruler "Until the day is done". A great song. |
