It's probably not how it was intended, but I think it could be about war. "Send away for a priceless gift One not subtle, one not on the list Send away for a perfect world One not simply, so absurd" Everyone thinks war is the anser and will make everything better In these times of doing what you're told You keep these feelings, no one knows What ever happened to the young man's heart Swallowed by pain, as he slowly fell apart" He personally doesn't believe in war, but is forced to fight anyways "And I'm staring down the barrel of a 45, Swimming through the ashes of another life No real reason to accept the way things have changed Staring down the barrel of a 45" He's taking the lives of others and feels bad about it and knows that there really is no reason for it "Send a message to the unborn child Keep your eyes open for a while In a box high up on the shelf, left for you, no one else There's a piece of a puzzle known as life Wrapped in guilt, sealed up tight" He's trying to think of how to explain to someone (his kid maybe?) of what he did in the war and how he feels bad about it. "Everyone's pointing their fingers Always condemning me And nobody knows what I believe I believe" Later, like presently, so many people who were orginally for war have now turned against it and blame soldiers for what they did. He thinks no one listens and understands that he didn't want to do what he did, but they just don't care, the judge him anyways. I think it's just a different perspective of the song. |
