Yup I agree with fireplace. I think the "handsome maverick" was the girl's ex-boyfriend, rather than someone she's cheated on our guy with. And he's jealous because he seemed so perfect, and terrified that she's going to go back to him. |

Ah see before I read these comments I was certain this song is about a holiday romance of some kind. Maybe the girl was visiting the place where the guy lives? "For weeks they had strolled around, Playing the fools. They knew the time would come And time would be cruel." See that bit makes me think that they always knew they only had a certain amount of time, until the girl went back home again. But the guy fell for her harder than he expected, and he can't stop thinking about her and stuff. But the girl just thinks of it as what it was: a summer fling. And so she had no trouble "turning into the night", leaving him with memories of the Meeting Place. Yeah I dunno, it seemed to make sense to me. |
